Oppression tells the story of Elyse, a girl who not only can heal people with her blood, but who mysteriously ages five times slower than regular people. Though she thinks she's alone in the world, there are actually many others like her, with different abilities but similar stories. She's special, though. There's a reason her parents never told her about the others of her kind. Before she was born, an oracle prophesied that she would bring change to her people. Elyse isn't sure that she's ready to be a revolutionary. She's only just begun to make friends, to discover who she is, and to find love. All in all, an incredible debut from Jessica Therrien. I'm looking forward to the rest of the books in the series.

YA fiction usually isn't the first thing I run to pick up, but anything that manages to combine Greek mythology, X-Men-like powers, mysterious prophecies and a coming-of-age story is worth the read. Jessica Therrien's Oppression does all this and more, bringing together a host of interesting characters into a story full of tension, romance, and discovery. You'll be glad the conclusion leads into a sequel, because this is not a world you'll want to be over with any time soon. Read this book.

This book was absolutely fantastic! There was not a moment when I was not enthralled.
Oppression follows the story of Elyse, a 89 year old woman who barely looks 18. She believes she has a rare genetic disorder which means she ages 5 times slower than the average person - but in reality the truth is a lot more exciting! She is in fact a Descendant - someone who is a descendant born from "Greek Gods". From the very beginning, this story jumps into action, and had me on the edge of my seat for every moment - I found it awfully hard to put down!
Not only is Oppression enchanting, but it also pulls on your heart-strings. You watch Elyse discover this new world she never imagined existed, and not only the beauty but also the horror that comes with it, and you just can't help but feel for her through-out the story.
Jessica Therrien has taken Greek Mythology, and put a fantastic modern twist to it - I can not wait to read book 2!

This original Young Adult Novel is a breakthrough, mixing the real world with the paranormal. It has characters you will fall in love with and characters you will hate. It will be the next page turner sitting on your shelves waiting for part 2!

This book was horrible. The main character is sopposed to be 80 years old bu she is so immature winey and completley dense and really 80 yrs old and never been kissed? Give me a break. This book was a waste of my time...a good concept overall and would have been good if an author who actually knew how to write well wrote this piece. Two thumbs down.

Jessica Therrien has a pretty good debut on her hands here. You’ve got kids (?) with abilities, romance, an evil to overthrow, and a super hot dude who smiles a lot. (Just how I like ‘em) Elyse, the main character, is sweet, innocent and shy. Sometimes I hate that but it worked here because she wasn’t so shy that it was crippling. She would venture out and do things. But was Elyse my favorite character? Nope, my fav was Kara the bad girl. You’ll know why once you read it. For now I’ll just leave it out that. William, our stud of the moment, is pretty awesome. Very smiley and says the perfect things at the perfect times. He does have a moment of bullheadedness which works because if he didn’t he’d be too perfect. I like him. He’s so flirty There are some points that I hope get worked out in the next novel like the flashes from one setting to another or one time period to another. They are pretty halting and hard to catch up with at times. The other thing that didn’t quiet fit was the characters ages with their maturity. I don’t think that’s going to change in the next novel because it would be too much. I liked their personalities I just don’t see how they are realistic when compared to their ages. All in all, this is an enjoyable read, especially if you like the Greek god scene. And I do.

Horrible book. I was so disappointed. I had just finished the Hunger Games and was looking for something good to stem the tide until John Dies at the End arrived. Reading these reviews and being really excited because it featured Greek gods, I eagerly bought this book for Nook. Almost from the start I noticed I was having a problem keeping up with what was going on in the story. The author doesn't make the book flow very well and random things will happen completely out of the blue and then these events aren't described very well. I made it over halfway through the book before finally getting so frustrated that I have given up. For such an interesting concept, Therrien could have handled it so much better. I strongly suggest reading the sample and seeing for yourself before wasting your money on such a poorly written book.

I am a very social girl. That said, I do not think I could voluntarily stay away from other people, for any reason. But that is exactly what Elyse does. For OVER 50 YEARS. Yikes. Elyse grows up knowing that she isn’t exactly, well, normal. Her first clue might be that she ages FIVE times slower than an average human. But, if that doesn’t convince her, the fact that her blood has the power to heal people just might. When her parents suddenly pass away, Elyse has to learn to adapt and blend in all on her own. As she moves on with her life, Elyse meets the mysterious William and tries desperately to stay away from him. She is pulled slowly into William’s world where she learns things, dangerous things, about herself and the world they live in. Will she fulfill the prophecy? Or will she take fate into her own hands…
Right away, I really connect with Elyse’s character! She obviously has had a sheltered life but, despite that, she is FULL of spunk. Elyse stands up for what she believes in and refuses to be intimidated into abandoning her loved ones. I respect her and understand what she thinks and feels. Her character is loveable and easy to relate too! I also feel attached to William but in a different way. He obviously cares for Elyse and would do anything to protect her, which is why I like him so much. I view Elyse as my friend, and he tries to protect and make her happy.
The mythology in Oppression is ASTOUNDING. I love how detailed it is. Every “Descendant” comes from a bloodline, and the powers are determined through the bloodlines. Therrien does a fantastic job of giving the descendants powers that are unique but that still make complete sense. I did not get to see nearly as many cool powers in action as I would have liked, but I suppose I can wait for book two for that!
I cannot help but notice how fast Elyse’s relationship with William turns serious. For someone who has spent her life hiding in shadows and keeping her distance, it takes Elyse almost no time to break free of those habits. In the very beginning of the book, she also blindly does what William asks of her, which I don’t think fits her character! That said, throughout the book I see Elyse grow more confident and become an amazing person.
The Cover:
This cover is a real eye grabber. It hooks my attention with its light against dark contrast and makes me instantly curious about its contents. I am not really sure what the circles of lighter color around the face represent, but they add depth and help frame the girl even more. I really like this cover!
I give Oppression 4.5 out of 5 stars: Very Highly Recommended!
