PreS-Gr 2—The pirates of the Dragonfish of Doom discover that their coffers are empty, necessitating a new quest for doubloons and other plundered goods. Cap'n Bones assures his men that he has an authentic treasure map and has charted a course to bring them to new spoils. They face dangers sharks and sea monsters, mermaids and storms, but the salty dogs prevail and find the treasure. When one of their crew suggests, "Let's buy lace britches—we've oodles of riches—and start our lives anew," they pledge en masse that they are "Pirates of the Sea!" Told in pirate-speak and rhyme, the story is somewhat hard to follow due to the sheer number of named characters (23) and action that takes place at a breakneck pace. However, the rich digital artwork in deep hues will draw readers in and audiences are likely to exclaim over comedic details like the pirate's teeth as well as their facial expressions.—Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York City
Kirkus Reviews

A pirate yarn sails familiar territory in satisfyingly rollicking fashion.

Subscribers all to the pirate code—"No cryin' / No dyin' / No brushing yer teeth! / No stealin' / No squealin' / No eatin' Parrot Pete!"—the ragged crew of Cap'n Bones sets out aboard the battered but seaworthy Dragonfish of Doom in search of hidden treasure. Dorman pairs his rousing (if not always regular) rhyme to swashbuckling scenes of scurvy knaves in typical pirate regalia (Cap'n Bones sports both pegleg and hook). They leer at mermaids with snaggle-toothed glee and weather hazards from butt-biting sharks to wild waves on the way to digging up a chest full of gold coins and more. "There be trinkets, / There be jewels, / There be even a gold chair. / There be goblets, / There be diamonds, / There be pirate underwear!" Young buccaneers along for the voyage will join the general derision that greets a proposal to "buy lace britches—we've oodles of riches—and start our lives anew." Full-bleed, shiny, saturated spreads depict the buccaneers—the very definition of a motley crew—with calculated, joyful excess.

As pirate fare goes, this is far from the only ship on the sea, but it does sail along smartly. (Picture book. 6-8)

I am a huge fan of Brandon Dorman, and not just because he graduated from the same university that I did (although I have to admit that it does make me a little biased). All you have to do is look at his amazing illustrations to know why I love his work so much. Pirates of the sea is a rhyming, swashbuckling adventure where we get to follow a group of appropriately disgusting pirates on their quest to find some buried treasure. The writing is upbeat and comical. The illustrations boast of Brandon's unique and energetic style. I just loved this book, and so did my kids. Any pirate lover will enjoy this sea faring adventure.

This is one of the best pirate books I've read. A must have for "Talk Like a Pirate Day".
