From The CriticsReviewer: Margaret R Hurst, BSN (University of New Mexico Hospital)
Description: This sixth edition pocket guide to chemotherapy protocols displays the information alphabetically by disease, listing drug regimens for each one. Regular updates to a reference like this are necessary to stay current with oncology practice.
Purpose: This is a quick reference for practitioners and healthcare professionals working with the oncology population to make sure dosing is correct for those who prescribe chemotherapy protocols or for nurses administering chemotherapy. The author acknowledges that it may not contain every chemotherapy protocol available, but he attempts to be as complete as possible. He urges readers to use this as a guide only, and to check with the original reference when possible.
Audience: This guide would be most helpful to those who prescribe chemotherapy and less helpful to those who administer chemotherapy, since double checking with a thorough reference is necessary prior to administration.
Features: Most of the major types of cancers are listed alphabetically with the most common chemotherapy regimens, a format that makes it easy to find the desired information. A possible shortcoming is that prescribers may rely only on the pocket guide without checking an original reference.
Assessment: This will be useful for clinicians who prescribe chemotherapy. However, as a nurse who administers chemotherapy, I would be unlikely to use this guide as I would be more inclined to check drug information in a reference that included nursing interventions/administration information as well as dosing parameters.
