Secrets swirl in the story of hair stylist Regan Burke and pediatrician Carter Scott, who met months ago at a wedding. It's now New Year's Eve, and the two meet again, with passionate results. Girlie Regan decides it was a lovely evening, and Rational Regan says it was a one-night stand. Rational Regan wins and focuses on how to make a living now that her beauty shop lease wasn't renewed. Coincidentally, Carter needs a receptionist for his new office. The two agree to maintain a professional relationship, but the tension between them unfolds as they uphold their promises and begin to uncover not only each other's secrets but those held by the friends and family around them.
Verdict Carter and Regan are strong, guarded characters who work hard to keep their personal trials and tribulations out of their social lives. Readers will peel off each layer of the plot to reveal who Carter and Regan really are. The story is convincing, but readers may be distracted by the Star Wars references that are tied to Regan's obsession with the films, though Carter's original Star Wars pickup lines are amusing.
