Great historical romance. Loved the characters and story line. I notice another review listed here with only one star. It must be posted for the wrong book because there is no character named Jake. And I disagree about the dialog completely. It's very well done and fits historical romance perfectly. Love the banter.

I bought this for my wife because she seems to enjoy the occasional mindless romance novel while I will pick up the typical formulaic crime thriller. When she asked me to return it after a few pages I didn't understand how she could have made a decision so quickly. I decided to read it and see whether she was giving it a fair shake. What I found was that despite some very forced action the book was not the least bit exciting. I equate romance with excitement so with that element lacking the characters motivation was not believable. The relationship that was depicted in the story between Jake and Angelina was based on a huge contradiction. Other reviewers stated that Angelina made Jake work for her love (both emotional trust and physical intimacy) but throughout the book it felt like she had to work to deny him these things. Even when she was in a position of power I felt that she essentially questioned whether she had any actual self worth unless it was expressed by others, and especially Jake. Angelina is the classic example of the fiery independent woman, who is only independent in appearance and can not bear to be alone. Now I understand that romance dialogue is supposed to be somewhat fantastical, but this was ridiculous. If anyone were to borrow the "verbage" used between the main characters and use it in a real life relationship they would most likely find themselves the owner of a single room apartment and multiple cat owner. I have to stress that the dialogue was way over the top, and I felt in any situation it would work against any chance at a conjugation between lovers, which made it almost farcical. Unfortunately it sounds like another of her books also revolves around a relationship which begins with the premise of a man and a woman who are initially married "in name only" and ultimately end up "discovering the passion behind their matrimony of circumstance." Really disappointing, for someone looking to find something new (me), and a fan of the genre (my wife). This is strictly a read for women who just need their rom-nov fix, but not those who are confident and optimistic, only for those who are easily manipulated and need a man to give them a sense of self worth. Too bad. Well, not entirely. I was still able to return it with the receipt. Nothing lost, nothing gained.
