Overview

"My name is Tess Little. But everyone calls me Red."

Once upon a time, a spell went awry, stranding Make Believe characters in the ordinary world. Since then, Tess "Red" Little--a/k/a Little Red Riding Hood--has worked as an Enforcer for the Chicago branch of the Fairytale Management Authority. But, consider yourself warned--she's not just some waif with a basket of goodies. All grown up and with nothing to lose, a gun and combat boots is more her style. And Red's new assignment threatens to be short on happily ever afters. . .

Someone is murdering transplanted Tales in gruesome fashion. The list of fictional characters capable of such grisly acts is short and includes more than one of Red's old flames. And if that wasn't bad enough, there's another complication, in the form of sexy, enigmatic Nate Grimm, the FMA's lead detective and part-time Reaper. Used to following her own rules and living life on the edge, Red has managed to avoid taking on a partner until now. But Nate's dark side makes him perfect for a case like this. That is, if she can trust him. Because if there's one thing Red knows for sure, it's that believing in the wrong person can have big, bad consequences. . .

"It's not often that something totally new and entertaining comes along, but Kate SeRine doesn't disappoint with Red. I definitely recommend this to readers who want humor, drama, suspense, and a truly entertaining, "feel good" romance." --Kate Douglas

"Unique and totally off-the-wall, fun, romantic, suspenseful, oh-my-GAWD enjoyable!" --Kate Douglas

"If you love fantasy, romance and old fashion gumshoe detective stories you are in for a great read!" --The Best Fantasy Stories

"Red ROCKED! The writing was smart and clever, and I really enjoyed SeRine's voice." --Basia's Bookshelf

National Reader’s Choice Award Winner Kate SeRine(pronounced "serene") faithfully watched weekend monster movie marathons while growing up, each week hoping that maybe this time the creature du jour would get the girl. But every week she was disappointed. So when she began writing her own stories, Kate vowed that her characters would always have a happily ever after. And, thus, her love for paranormal romance was born.

Kate lives in a smallish, quintessentially Midwestern town with her husband and two sons, who share her love of storytelling. She never tires of creating new worlds to share and is even now working on her next project.

Modernization of fairytale characters with not so perfect lives, a bloody mystery, & blooming relationship

Tess Little's, know as Red, recent mark to bring in Dave "Pied Piper" is a usual occurrence of minor parole violation turns surprising and doesn't make sense when he quickly takes his own life in front of her instead of going in. Something had him sacred and doesn't feel right. When Detective Nate Grimm shows Red is stunned by her response to him, then she's called back to the office at FMA - Fairytale Management Authority. Red learns there have been four severely brutal murders in the last thirty days and appears all by same person. They all seem to be four small time Tale characters, no one knows why these people were clawed to death. Red's boss, Al Addin, wants Red to bring the suspects in for questioning including Seth "Big Bad" Wolf whom Red thought was her happily ever after at one time and a few others whom she had relations with in the past. Al wants this over before the Ordinaries, humans, catch wind of the murders. Red believes down deep none of the suspects are guilty, especially the top of their list - Seth. Red's not wanting to deal with any old lovers, which is complicated by her growing attraction to the detective who requested her as his partner - Detective Nate Grimm.

I love the Prologue! We learn of the fairytale characters being in the Here and Now and a brief reasoning as to why they have crossed over. It's told from Tess Little, Red as everyone calls her. Red is grown up and one tough lady as an Enforcer for the Fairytale Management Authority. I really like Red off the bat. She seems like a no nonsense kind of woman, one who holds her own. Red has grown and made a life for herself, yet she's still hurt too, in her heart. And she's dated a few...damaged Tale men as well. Red is use to working alone and now she has a partner, this is hard for her to adjust to.

I really felt like many of the Tale characters and their Here and Now lives blended. Some I was surprised to see in their positions, but being in the "real" life scenario they are not who they were in their stories and lives are way different here.

I so enjoyed Nate Grimm, a Homicide detective with his special talent to know when one of the fairy tales die and instantly there. Oooo Nate! Oh do I LOVE Nate's story. What we learn about him through the story. *sigh* In the end I do think I loved him, well, I strongly liked him in the beginning. Not only is Nate an amazing sounding man, but I loved the way his story fit with Red, her life, and into the story. Wonderfully planned!

I kept reading as I wanted to know who committed the murders of these background characters and why. I love Red's determined hard self and the banter with her and Nate... love/hate/love, friend, more? And to meet all these troubled "bad boys" Red has dated. We follow Red learning all the clues along with her, and kept me guessing. I had my suspicions and there were surprises that fit PERFECTLY with the clues we got. A mystery story that will keep you flipping and guessing.

This is a modernization of fairytale characters with a bloody mystery to solve and it seems to touch Red's personal life.

If you haven't picked this up yet because you fear to much Romance, GO GET IT! There is an enticing murder story here. And wonderful molding of Fairytale characters in the ordinary world. There is falling in love present but not over the top here. There is a perfect combination with the growth of the relationshi

I recently read this--I enjoy spins on fairy tales.

Tess Littls is "Red" she used to be Little Red Riding Hood--but she and many other "Tales" crossed over years ago into the world of ordinaries (humans). She's an enforcer, her job is to take in Tales that are breaking the law.

When one Tale kills himself, instead of allowing Tess to bring him in, she is forced into an investigation of a series of murders with the primary suspects being her former lovers. She is roped into working with Nate Grimm, a "Reaper" also known as Death.

Together they attempt to uncover the truth, as they fight their growing attraction. In the end--their fate is tied together. Literally.

I loved the world building--and the different characters--we meet Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, plus a multitude of different characters.

Nate --is intriguing, preferring old style suits, fedoras, and mannerisims.

Tess--is a very angry woman. She's tough, doesn't like to get close and is at times over the top. She's almost too angry for me, at her personal black moment she frustrated me--I almost put the book down. But, in the end it all worked out very nicely.
I think this is an engaging story and I look forward to more from this author.

Great read. Really liked Tess "RED" Little.  Thought Kate Serine's take on what Fairy Tale characters would be doing if forced to live on the real world was perfect. Can't wait to read more about these characters.

Not your kids' fairy tale! Kind of a gritty noir take on every once-upon-a-time you've ever read. Part of the fun is discovering who these familiar storybook characters have become in this new world - bonus points to an author who has obviously internalized the writer's mantra of "show, don't tell."

Just finished and had to comment.  Great story.  Red is an awesome character.  Reminds me somewhat of Stephanie Plum-a good detective with great instincts who bumbles around a little and has had her share of boyfriend trouble.  It was interesting how Ms. SeRine used the fairy tales we know and love to create each storyline in the real world.  I look forward to the next chapter in the series.

Fun, well-paced, and imaginative, the story drew me in and kept me reading 'til the end. I really enjoyed the unexpected ways the characters developed once in the "ordinary world" and that the plot wraps up enough to be a stand-alone book. Even so, the writing in engaging enough that I want to follow along on the next assignment. I recommend.

    LOVED IT!!!!!!!

I thought it would be an interesting twist on a classic fairy tale, but it was so much better. It makes you wonder what life would be like if it was all true, and the details allow you to picture the events, places, and characters in your mind. Little to no spelling or grammer mistakes, that I saw, and this makes me even happier. This book was the first one I read by this author and I will tell you I am going to reread this and more. Cannot wait for more in the series, I bought the next one as soon as I could, and can't wait to start it.

    Interesting....

A nice refreshing and different take on our beloved and not so beloved fairytale characters. I gave it only four stars because it was very frustrating to read the way things were left with the vampire, I will not elaborate as I don't want to ruin it for future readers. Safe to say it was a very enjoyable read, Red and Grimm had amazing, PG13, chemistry. I prefer more spice in my books but I enjoyed reading this book and all the tension between the characters. I can't wait to read the next book in this series...
