My family has directly bene? ted from some of the technological and scientifi c advances made in the care of critically ill children. My son Ryan was born during my third year of medical school. By some peculiar happenstance, I was nearing completion of a 4-week rotation in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU). The head of the pediatrics clerkship was kind enough to let me have a few days off around the time of the delivery—my wife, Cathy, was 2 weeks past her due date and had been scheduled for elective induction.

Description: This softcover book contains 12 chapters from an earlier comprehensive work, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine: Basic Science and Clinical Evidence, by the same authors (Springer, 2007).
Purpose: A review of physiology and progress in pediatric resuscitation is emphasized.
Audience: Fellows and practitioners treating critically ill children are an appropriate audience for this work, which emanates from major pediatric centers in North America.
Features: After an overview of emergency medical services for children, adjuncts for cardiopulmonary support are described including airway, vascular access, and transportation medicine. Key clinical topics are discussed, including shock, respiratory failure, and brain death associated with considerations in withdrawal of life support. Chapters are well written and illustrated with high quality, black-and-white line drawings and black-and-white photographs of lesser quality. Each chapter contains extensive references dating to within three years of the date of publication.
Assessment: With this work, the authors have produced one of a series of softcover books providing an excellent overview of pediatric critical care. Historical foundation and physiology are effectively reviewed. A review of the references suggests that some of the chapters could be updated. As it appears this did not happen in the interval between the publication of the parent textbook in 2007 and this book, an opportunity to improve upon a good presentation may have been lost.
