The only sure way to destroy a man is to take what he cannot live without.

Three years ago, I had everything.

A beautiful wife.
A son.
A reason for living.

Until a ruthless task force, assembled under Mayor Michael Culling, with a brutal strategy to make the streets of Detroit 'safe', ripped away everything I loved in a deadly hunt called The Culling.

They tried to kill me, too. I wish they had. Now I'm cursed by the memories of that night, and the words I whispered to my dying wife.

A promise-to avenge the wrong and set it right.

I'm no longer Nick Ryder. I'm a masked vigilante. Faceless. Loveless. Fearless. A man with nothing left to lose-one who's seen the dark and violent truth behind the city's flawless veneer.

Michael Culling doesn't know who I am. Or what I want. All he knows is that I've kidnapped his beautiful wife.

An eye for an eye-isn't that how the saying goes? And Aubree Culling is the perfect pawn to destroy him.

If she doesn't destroy me first.

The cover caught my eye....but the story blew me away! This was an incredible story but is not for the squeamish. The story is brutal & at times hard to read but so worth it. The twist at the end...WOW!!!! I loved it! Great job!

Dark, Edgy, Thrilling! * Read Trigger warning at end! ** Provided by Netgalley in Exchange for an Honest Review ** Judging a Book by it's Cover: I have an insanely huge fan-girl crush on this wickedly intense cover. The model's expression and bone structure, combined with the light play in his eyes... whoa! Equally intense is the synopsis. This one promises to get your blood pumping in a thrillingly dark and edgy way! Looking Deeper: First-person POV from numerous characters' perspectives: clearly defined and easy to follow. Wow, this one did not disappoint, it is dark, thrilling, edgy, and a bit sickly twisted. Outstanding character leads with a strong, supportive secondary cast. Excellent gradual portrayal of an enemy-to-lover relationship. Realistic and natural feeling dialogue and interaction is present throughout between all of the characters. There is a real, tangible quality to Ms. Lake's cast of characters. The plot is much darker than what I normally read in a Romantic Suspense. This is more an Erotic Psychological Thriller and DOES contain many TRIGGER SUBJECTS including, but not limited to: mutilation of self and/or others, graphic sexual and physical abuse, drug and alcohol use, trafficking: weapons and humans. Flow is smooth, but feels heavy, due to the content, I'm sure. There were several points in the book that I'd made a mental note in questioning a particular aspect and was thrilled that during the climactic "big reveal" that I had caught part of it, but only the surface layer. The plot played out with so much depth, raw emotion, and dimension that it really rose above and beyond my expectations. Ms. Lake wrote a phenomenal story here and I have to wonder if she came out the other side of the process the same person or this did not change her, even just a little bit. Amazing. The conclusion is solid, Aubree's hope becomes our own. We are all left satisfied with a HEA with NO Cliffhanger. If you are looking for something that contains no frill or fluff, something that keeps your heart pumping and your mind racing - I'd highly recommend this book to you TO-DAY! ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rating: 5 [X] ~ Score: 4.8 ~ Stars: 5 Warning: Erotic Psychological Thriller - contains many TRIGGER SUBJECTS including, but not limited to: mutilation of self and/or others, graphic sexual and physical abuse, drug and alcohol use, trafficking: weapons and humans -------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a story of revenge and survival. It's told in first person, alternating between Nick and Aubree. Flashbacks are also prominent. Basically Detroit is a cesspool ran by an alliance of the worst of the worst in criminals and city officials. Human trafficking, rape and murder happen as freely as crossing the street. The storyline gets quite brutal at times. Michael Culling is the head of this evil undertaking. What he took from Nick is just unimaginable. It can never make up for what he's been through, but Nick is on a mission to take Culling and his crew down as painfully as possible. Part of his plan includes Culling's wife Aubree. What Nick comes to know is that he and Aubree have more in common than anyone realized. I recommend this book for someone who likes the whole Dark Knight idea with added very mature content. Nick is reminiscent of the DC character, but he also comes with plenty of extra twists.

4.5 stars---RICOCHET is a contemporary, adult, standalone, dark romance from author Keri Lake focusing on revenge and retribution. This is former computer game designer Nick Ryder, and abuse counselor Aubree Culling’s storyline. The storyline is set in the dark and seedy underbelly of Detroit’s criminal element and the political elite who believe themself above the law. Told from alternating first person points of view (Aubree and Nick) as well as several third person perspectives RICOCHET follows Nick Ryder as he seeks revenge for the murder of his wife and son, and the horrific nightmare that has been left in its’ place. Three years earlier Nick walked into a brutal massacre, of which, his beautiful wife and son did not survive. With Nick left for dead, the killers set the house ablaze and walked away without a second glance. What ensues is a dark, gritty and graphically violent plan to take down everyone responsible including the people calling the shots. Enter Aubree Culling-Major Michael Culling’s wife, and the perfect target to start Nick’s vendetta. Aubree Culling is the mayor’s wife, and therefore, guilty by association. As Nick sets his sights on destroying Mayor Culling, Aubree will be abducted and held hostage while Nick sets his plan into motion. But Aubree has a secret, one that Nick will soon discover, pushing our anti-hero to avenge the woman with whom he is falling in love. There is a slight ‘Stockholm Syndrome’ or ‘Capture Bonding’ feel to the storyline wherein our heroine will fall for the man holding her hostage. RICOCHET is a graphically violent storyline about a man obsessed with vengeance against those that destroyed his life. Nick Ryder is a one man vigilante; a broken soul who continues to suffer with the pain and grief, and the memories of the suffering inflicted upon the people that he loves. Nick is a man, who without remorse or guilt sets into motion a plan to avenge the murders of his wife and son. He is ruthless and unforgiving; no one will survive his need for retribution. The only thing grounding Nick is his growing love for the woman he holds hostage but Nick never expected to survive at the end. I am not from Michigan but I grew up aware of Detroit’s reputation as the ‘murder capital of USA’ and the ‘Devil’s Night’ path of destruction and chaos. Our family would watch the fall out from a night where the criminal element, as well as the copy-cats who destroyed a little bit more of the city of Detroit. Keri Lake weaves a fictional tale of retaliation that is centered in and around the Devil’s Night pandemonium and anarchy on the streets-a ‘free for all’ that was all but ignored by the political structure and law enforcement of one of America’s most dangerous cities. RICOCHET is a story about retribution and revenge; acceptance and moving forward; falling in love and never letting go. It is also about two people whose lives are forever connected; scarred; and emotionally ravaged. The premise is dark, gritty, raw and graphic; the characters damaged, brutal and destroyed; the romance intense and all –consuming. There is a happily ever after but one that comes with a price that is the reality of Nick Ryder.

Oh.my.WOW. I don't even know where to start with my review. This book completely took me by surprise and left me breathless!! I don't know if you noticed, but the cover of this book is hypnotizing. Nick Ryder has a story to tell and you can see it in his eyes. Keri Lake is a new to me author. I'm always scared to read books by new authors especially in a genre that I don't read very often. I understand that this is Keri Lake's first dark romance/romantic suspense book. And, let me tell you ... It freakin' fantastic! I added all her paranormal books to my TBR list because I have been looking for some paranormal romance books to read and her Sons of Wrath and Halos series sound amazing! Ricochet is the story of Nick Ryder. Three years ago his life was turned upside down. He has been living and breathing for only one thing ... Revenge. His revenge is carefully planned until Aubree Culling comes along and changes everything. Nick learns that things are not always as they seem. As days go by, his revenge seems to take a different direction. Aubree gets under his skin and makes him feel things that his broken heart shouldn't feel. Nick is determined to keep his promises and obtain his revenge, but will his feelings for Aubrey get in the way of his ultimate goal? I have to admit that I got chills while reading this book. I read it in one sitting because I simply could not put it down! Keri Lake's writing style is PHENOMENAL!!! She took my heart broke it into a million pieces and slowly put it back together in the most unexpected way. Ricochet keep me on the edge of my seat the whole time I was reading it. It was fast-paced, highly intense and the shocking twists in the story left me speechless! I really don't want to spoil the book for anybody so I will not talk about what happens with Nick's revenge. Read the blurb and embark on this twisted and emotional roller coaster ride! Nick and Aubree's story will linger with you for days after you have finished reading it. I do want to talk about the characters in this story. Nick and Aubree are fascinating. Their alternative POV's really made me connect with them from the very beginning. Their chemistry is undeniably sexy. Keri Lake knows how to write some pretty steamy scenes. Prepare your fan because these two are FIRE together! I loved how they talked about their pasts and how they each found some inner peace in all the darkness. This is not only a story of revenge. It's a story of love, hope and survival. The other characters in this story were all important in Nick and Aubree's journey. Their is evil lurking in Detroit and some of these characters took it to a whole other level with their twisted mind games. I have to admit that one of the characters made me want to throw my ereader across the room! He's despicable, sick and evil! The things he said and did made me sick! I guarantee that you will feel the same way! I don't need to tell you who it is ... You will know the second you meet him. If you are looking for a dark romance that is intense, deliciously naughty and that will keep you reading until your eyes start burning ... Look no further! Ricochet is what you are looking for! I give Ricochet, by Keri Lake, 4.5 twisted, thrilling, sexy, raw, tragic stars!

After reading the synopsis months ago, I was literally salivating to get my hands on this book. I am a huge fan of dark reads and this one appeared it would be something new and twisted. I was somewhat surprised to learn this was the author's first contemporary romance, it certainly didn't feel like it. This book is definitely not for the light reader; there are graphic and intense scenes from the Prologue onward. However, it's a gripping tale of the lengths people will go to for revenge. To defeat a monster, I had to become one. There is no more realistic place to set this book than Detroit, and it makes the story and characters much more believable. Nick is a deeply troubled anti-hero. Despite his need for revenge and overwhelming sadistic ways of achieving it, I found myself empathizing with him almost from the beginning. Most of his tactics are so disturbing, but I could not stop reading or even rationalizing his methods. While Nick is brazen, Aubree is the silent survivor. The torment she endures made me cringe but she never waivers. I admired her immensely, and she is a survivor in the truest sense. "I bleed my sins." While I liked the chemistry between Nick and Aubree, it did feel forced at times. I really enjoyed their separate storylines and was hopeful their chemistry would carry the same intense emotion. Mayor Culling is one of the most vile villains, and I admire the ability to create such a hated character. I do not want to spoil the plot, but I was able to determine early on what was happening. While it did take away from the overall surprise factor toward the end, I still enjoyed the journey. This is the first book I have read by Ms. Lake but can't wait to read some of her PNR work. I would recommend this book to any seasoned fan of dark romance.

This is my 4th Keri Lake and the first being a contemporary. To say I have a high expectation for Ricochet is a big understatement and I'm extremely glad that this book hit all the right spot for me. It is full with action, suspense and twist at every turn. It had been a long time since I was so entertained and engrossed with a book. Readers prepare to be thrown into an intensely brutal ride with Nick and Aubree and witness how they find love amidst the destruction surrounding them. Immerse yourself in Nick's path to vengeance and the absolutely depravity of mankind that left me cowered in terror. Nick Ryder is a man who suffered absolute destruction of his perfect life right in front of his eye. The only motivation that keeps him breathing is to make the people who ruined his life pay for what they did. Aubree Culling might seem like the perfect trophy wife to Mayor Michael Culling, but her life was a far cry from perfect. She had been living in terror ever since she was married to the monster who might kill her one day. When Nick decided to kidnap Aubree as part of his revenge plan, is Aubree leaving one hell for another, or she could finally taste freedom for the first time? Nick and Aubree's chemistry is explosive and left me panting for me. I love that Nick had so much darkness within him and such a tortured anti-hero. I wonder how can he crawl out from his self-destruction and find hope in his life again. Keri Lake did what she did best from her experience in paranormal series which is to paint a vivid picture of the utter depravity of Detroit that make me felt as if it is another Gotham City. The bleak backdrop really set the mood right for me. I don't think I can hear the name Detroit without a shiver up my spine. Although I am a romance reader at heart, I will honestly claim that I was even more invested in the suspense part of Nick's revenge. Whenever he managed to kill another bad guy, I just want to cheer and pop the champagne. I don't think I had ever been as blood thirsty before. Recommended for lover of dark and suspenseful romance and who have the stomach for violence. And the best part is - this is a standalone.
