Vee Bell is certain of one irrefutable truth—her sister's friend Sophie didn't kill herself. She was murdered.
Vee knows this because she was there. Everyone believes Vee is narcoleptic, but she doesn't actually fall asleep during these episodes: When she passes out, she slides into somebody else's mind and experiences the world through that person's eyes. Jill Hathaway grew up in Iowa and received her MA in literature from Iowa State University. She is also the author of slide, the first book about Vee Bell. A high school English teacher, Jill lives with her husband and children in the Des Moines area.
Slide is the debut young adult novel of author Jill Hathaway. Hathaway delivers a suspenseful murder mystery complete with twists, romance and a unique paranormal ability. Slide was an enjoyable read and I got caught up in solving the mystery. I was able to finish this in just a few hours and found it to be a delightfully suspenseful tale. The protagonist is Vee Bell. She suffers from narcolepsy. (A disease that causes a person to fall asleep, anywhere at any time) This would be a horrible problem to deal with for anyone, but Vee has an even bigger problem. When she has an episode she slides. Sliding causes her to slip into someone else’s mind and experience what that person is experiencing through their eyes. Vee has learned that this occurs when she is touching an object that the other person owns or touched. As a result, she is very careful not to touch things. Vee’s ability is a dark secret she hasn’t shared with anyone. When it first began happening, shortly after the death of her mother, she confessed to her Dad. The next thing Vee knew she was seeing a shrink and being medicated. Vee quickly learned not to talk about it. My feeling for Vee waivered back and forth, but ultimately I came to like her. She hasn’t had it easy, pops too many caffeine pills and has way too much responsibility for a girl her age. Her disease has made her a social outcast, and placed her in some serious situations. Her best friend Rollins saved her from one and she depends on his friendship to ground her. Rollins has feeling for Vee, and she knows it, but doesn’t act. A new boy named Zack begins school and flirts with her. Vee is attracted to Zack and their relationship is filled with some cute moments. While there is high school drama and a love triangle the tale primarily focuses on a murder mystery. This occurs when Vee accidently slides into someone she cannot identify and realizes she has witnessed a murder. The victim turns out to be her sister’s best friend Sophie. The police and everyone else think Sophie’s committed suicide. Vee knows the truth and she struggles with what to do with this knowledge. The tale that unfolds involves death, suspense and secrets. In order for Vee to solve this and prevent any more victims, she needs to slide and take control of her ability. I enjoyed watching her put the pieces together. Hathaway cleverly lays clues which have you thinking one thing, only to discover something else entirely. Definitely one of the best books I've ever read. It has so much suspense it's almost unreal. When you read this book, it feels like your in a whole different world. It has some major suggestive themes but nothing graphic. I believe that the ages for this book should be at least 14+. Sylvia, the main character can pass out when she touches an item that someone had an emotional fit with. When she passes out, she slips into that person's POV. It's so much better than it sounds, when I read the back I thought it was going to be a depressing mystery. There are sad parts, but depression is definitely not the main genre. There's some drama, definitely some mystery, romance, hurt/comfort, betrayal, and major friendship. I'm not really a super emotional guy, but at points my eyes watered up a bit. Haha, I definitely recommend this book to most people, minimum age being 13.

Having a main character with narcolepsy and an ability to “slide” into the point of view of another individual, via an emotional connection to an object that Vee Bell then touches herself is certainly a different type of gift or curse, depending on how one views Vee’s predicament. She’s a likeable character in a book filled with emotionally charged characters and relationships. Like Rollins and Mattie, Vee is bursting with depth, compassion, and understanding, and she has heart in a world that can sometimes be consumed by the heartless.
While the mystery was certainly good, it did have its share of holes and was by no means executed flawlessly. But SLIDE is much more than the mystery that consumes many of its pages. Even more than the mystery, though, it’s a study in character and the hallowed high school halls, in being an outsider once near the heart of the popular crowd, and how single, monumental moments can have lingering, lasting effects. It’s a quick read filled with complexity and emotional nuggets that sat with me long after I reached the end.

I loved it. Once you thought it was going to wrap up it got even more intense and something new was happening. Plus, i would have never guesses the ending........ TOTALLY SUPRISING!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!

You should defenitly read this it is the best book in the world so it has some curse words it is soooooooooo good! I couldn't figure out who killed sophie it is amasing!

Another innovative young adult concept. Vee has an interesting problem
or ability, she can slide into others' bodies and view what the others
are seeing and doing. She cannot control this ability and needs to touch
an object connected to another person to truly slide. These
"narcoleptic fits" make for many awkward moments for poor Vee.
They can also make for deadly visits. Vee slides into the body of
someone she would do anything to get out of. She sees the death of her
sister's friend, a friend whose death may be passed off as a suicide
unless Vee can prove it differently. Overall, Vee is a good main
character. She is interesting, smart, and inquisitive. She is
down-to-earth serious and makes for a great narrator. Her friend,
Rollins, has his own demons to fight, but he still sticks by Vee's side
even when the going gets tough. The other secondary characters are not
the nicest, the reader may dislike quite a few other characters in this
novel. The events are fast-paced, this book is a quick read. The scenes
where Vee slides are vibrantly described, the reader can literally
imagine it happening. The book contains many different twists and
surprises that will keep the reader on his/her toes. The reader will not
want this book to end. Slide is perfect for teen/young adult readers.

Oh goody, another mystery.
The last time I read a mystery novel (The Kidnapping of Christina Lattimore) I was disappointed by the book's unpredictable ending. I fell in love with that book and it only betrayed me in the end. *sniffle* However, my wounds have healed and I was willing to give the mystery genre another chance.
But unlike Lattimore, which completely relied on the mystery aspect, Slide focuses on a people in general, their habits, their secrets, and sometimes their emotional well-being.
Author Jill Hathaway introduces a clever and original aspect in sliding, and it helps move the story along in a fluid and swift pace as well as giving the reader an inside look at each suspects lives that is not offered in other mystery books. It gives the reader an inside scoop on every suspect and leaves them feeling like they have the inside edge.
Vee is incredibly likable. I felt for her whenever she remembered her mother, and her journey from popular cheerleader to pink haired outcast seemed believable and cruel at the same time. Slide paints public high school as a deep dark hole with vicious people that will look for every opportunity to tear you apart if you get on their bad side. It's a world full of people so bored that they would relish your social downfall just to have something to talk about. Is public high school really like that? I've never been, so I wouldn't know.
However, as engaging and original Slide is, it has its flaws. Some scenes seem to have happened again and again with the same people, just in different rooms. particularly the part where Vee says something to Rollins that she realizes will come across as rude just as it comes out of her mouth. This scene happens many times. Characters. Also. Do. This. A. Lot. When. They. Are. Trying. To. Get. A. Point. Across. It was cute the first couple of times but after that it became annoying. But the big problem is this: Like many mysteries, the author tries too hard to make the mystery's answer unpredictable. The character that was the killer is the one that Vee has almost no evidence against. The killer is a minor character instead of one of the major ones that are considered suspects. Nevertheless, Slide has an ending that is satisfying enough to close a stand-alone novel, but leaves enough questions to justify a sequel.

Yet again, the reading world is graced with another contemporary/paranormal mix. I'm not keen on the mixture but what can I say. It's different. Slide is not your normal contemporary and paranormal mix. It harnesses a uniqueness of its own. And that is the ability to slide into someone when one falls asleep. Now, in this case, Sylvia does all the Sliding. She's an edgy type of girl with punkish pink hair and a personality that's average for a normal teenage girl only difference is that she can slide and she hates it. She tries to avoid it at all costs.
In my opinion, Sylvia's the only thing that keeps her family grounded. After her mothers death, her dad became a workaholic and her little sister is on a tightrope trying to conform into the popular crowd in high-school. While Sylvia stays out the popular crowd and sticks with the two-person crowd her and best friend, Rollins. Rollins is an interesting character, nothing new but interesting.
As the story goes along and Sylvia, tries to unravel the mystery of her sisters best friends suicide after a series of bullying and the truth that it wasn't a suicide but a murder. This knowledge she obtained by accidentally sliding into the murderer, as the murderer writes the victims suicide note.
This has her on her toes in fear that her sister might be next. Her fight to find answers was slow and kind of dragging. But when another "suicide" comes in. The story begins to pick-up pace and everything started happening too fast. Almost like the author rushed it. Either way, the story was realistic. I don't think I've ever read a young adult contemporary novel that has so much gore and death in it.
The book was unexpectedly good. It thrills you with mystery and death and definitely keeps you entertained with the corny but sweet romance. Along with the touching family bonding and support. Not much of an unputdownable book but Slide is most certainly a good book with a good plot that will keep you entertained enough to finish the book all the way through.
Sylvia "Vee" Bell has passed out often enough in class for everyone to know she's narcoleptic. What no one would believe is that Vee doesn't just pass out during her episodes.
When Vee loses consciousness she can slide into someone else's mind. Most of the time when Vee slides she discovers secrets she'd rather not know like seeing her sister, Mattie, cheating on a math test or watching a teacher sneak a drink before class.
When Vee slides late one night she sees something much worse: the murder of her sister's best friend, Sophie. While everyone else believes that Sophie killed herself, Vee knows the truth. Even if she has no way to prove it.
As Vee learns more about her sliding and unearths secrets about her friends and family, she'll have to try to stop the killer herself before they strike again in Slide (2012) by Jill Hathaway.
Slide is Hathaway's first novel.
In this sharp mystery with a sly supernatural twist, Hathaway introduces a heroine with equal parts candor and spunk. Vee's narration is frank and unapologetic making her easy to identify with and even easier to love.
At a slim 256 pages, Slide is a finely tuned page turner filled with unexpected surprises for Vee and readers alike. Vee's father and sister are well-developed characters with their own flaws and, more troubling for Vee, their own secrets. Similarly Vee's best friend Rollins is an admirable foil to Vee and adds another dimension to the story as he and Vee try to untangle their newly-complicated friendship.
While Vee works to use her sliding to uncover the killer, Vee also comes into her own as she learns more about how she slides as well as how to simply be herself. Slide finishes with an ending that is as shocking as it is satisfying. Hathaway skillfully completes most story threads while leaving room for future installments in what will hopefully be a long running series.

Narcolepsy is the perfect cover for being a "slider," but is it the most socially acceptable when you're in high school and no longer a cheerleader? I don't think so... Vee has a hard time with her life in general; her mother recently died, her little sister has hit puberty with a vengeance and her father's a famously, oft-needed doctor. She has no friends except a
strangely different sort of guy who seems to understand her; but with whom she can't share her "sliding."
And, then there's a murder that she just happens to know about when everyone else thinks it's a suicide, because she accidently slid into the murder's body when it happened!
This suspenseful novel by Jill Hathaway is a young adult winner by any standards.
It has the quintessentially beautiful, pink haired misfit girl, the hunky jock, cheerleaders,
goth-edged gorgeous guy, the dark stranger guy and the slightly attractive male teacher...along with the tragic
teen aged angst of suicide and parents missing by death and choice. It's all a winning soup.
The plot is thick and good.
I loved this book for many reasons. It's well written, it's absorbing, and
it's a cliff hanger of the old school sort.
Jill Hathaway has my attention, and I'll be looking forward to more of her books.

This is a great YA fiction/thriller which I think adult readers would also enjoy.
First Impressions: Let me first talk about this gorgeous cover. I must say at first glance I fell head over heals in love with it. My favorite color has always been purple and I love how the whole cover has such a beautiful purple hue, even her face. The word "SLIDE" on the cover looks like it is literally sliding on the cover making for a unique effect. After reading what the book was about I knew I wanted to read it as soon as possible. I was so happy when I found it was at my library. I read, no DEVOURED this book in one day!
My Review: Slide is a highly anticipated debut novel of 2012. This book in no way will disappoint the reader, with twists and turns throughout that will having you guessing who did what and why. Slide is a whole new kind of urban fantasy novel unlike anything out there. The main character "Vee" or Slyliva has a very unique gift or curse if you ask her. Vee was diagnosed with what is thought to be narcolepsy. She falls asleep or passes out randomly, but what really happens is she slides into another person's body while out. She has no control when she slides or into who. Most times the person she will slide into will have some kind of connection with Vee while she is awake. One day at school Vee finds out while accidently sliding into her sister that her sister's friend Amber and her are planning to play a mean joke on a girl named Sophie who used to be friends with them. After this cruelty, Sophie is depressed and crying wondering why someone would do something so mean. That night while Vee is star gazing something pokes her from within her pocket and she begins to feel woozy. Before she knows it Vee slides into Sophie's room. She does not who she has slide into but see that the person is wearing gloves and holding a long silver blade. Sophie lies on her bed sliced up and blood is everywhere. Now it is up to Vee to find out who killed Sophie and made it look like a suicide.
This book is packed full of so much mystery and suspense. I never knew what would happen next or who she would Slide into to try to uncover who really killed Sophie. I was so engulfed in the story needing to know what would happen next I did not remember to eat lunch. The author's writing style was flawless and the pace of the story was lightning fast especially when you MUST know what will happen next. I love a book that will keep me guessing and end with a "I never saw that coming"! Wow, just WOW!! I would definitely say that Slide is one of the best novels I have read in a long time. Everything about this book is exceptional!
Final Thoughts: If I could tell author Jill Hathaway one thing it would have to be "Slide rocked my socks off"! I was not expecting such an exhilarating story and one that I could read over and over with no lack of excitement. Vee was just awesome with a CAPITAL, V!! The ending was a "I did not see that coming" moment and I am still trying to pick my chin off the floor. I SO NEED the next book in this series, but while I wait I have the chance to tell each of you to go out NOW and buy or rent SLIDE. YOU will not be sorry you did. =D

When I read the premise for Slide by Jill Hathaway I knew this was a book I had to read. I mean, I've never read anything like it. This girl can slide into other people's mind and she witnesses a murder. No big deal, right? Seriously, though, this story is epic. It's full of deaths and mystery and so much frackin intrigue. How could anyone resist? ¿
The beginning was really strong. We're introduced to Vee's narcolepsy, and in turn her sliding, which really sucked me in! But then the middle kind of sagged for me. Vee spends a lot of time wishing and wanting. She wishes that she could tell Rollins the truth about sliding, she wants to figure out who the murderer is, and she wishes people would consider the prospect of a murder instead of suicide. It killed me because it's like, Girl, you've got this incredible skill and you're not even trying to utilize it. But once she realized she could use her gift to help her solve the mystery, things got much more interesting. All of a sudden, everyone was a suspect. As the story unfolded, though, it was pretty obvious who was guilty and his or her motivations.
I simultaneously liked and disliked the ending. I mean, it was really intense, but it almost felt like I was watching a scary movie. You know the whole, "DO NOT GO UPSTAIRS. DON'T LOOK IN THE CLOSET! TURN AROUND. RUN. RUN NOW!" kind of thing. Sometimes I thought that Vee was kind of dumb. Everything was right under her nose the only way she saw it was with a big neon sign. At first, I wasn't pleased with the ending, because I thought this was going to be a standalone, but when I discovered it is a series, I thought it was all wrapped up quite nicely. Still, there are more things I want to know. Like, why does she slide? Is there a way she can control it? And did the very very very ending mean what I think it did!?
I thought that the characterization was executed pretty well, for the most part. Vee may not be the brightest, but I do love her background story and the way that, even though her sister is a complete brat to her, she is still always there for her and eager to protect her. Rollins was my favorite, of course. He was mysterious, but not in a way that we didn't get to know anything about him. He was sweet and obviously really cared for Vee. I hope there is a buttload more of him in the sequel. Zane was an okay character. We learn a few major things about him but for the most part we don't get to know him at all. There was a case of insta-love with him, but the romance doesn't play a particularly prominent role in the book, so it's not as annoying as most cases.
All in all, Slide by Jill Hathaway was a quick read with an interesting premise. I will definitely be looking forward to the sequel. Although I wasn't particularly blown away by the book, I think it's a book that appeals to everyone, and I'd recommend you give it a shot!
Slide by Jill Hathaway is entertaining but in my opinion I would have LOVED it if Slide gave a little MORE! Slide was a fast read, a great story and gave a mystery suspense feel, but there was just not enough depth into some aspects. I would have liked to know more about Zane, Rollins, Vee's mother, or even Sylvia herself. Though predictable in the outlining of the mystery of whom the murderer was the out laying of the story was enjoyable. Vee was kind of dense in some parts (i.e. her best friend and her boyfriend), but I liked her voice and she's not a bad but rather a likable character. I really enjoyed the foreground of the loss and impact of Sylvia's Mom had on all of them. I always relish tear jerkers! It is what gets me in the mind set of what I am reading. =)
The prospect of "sliding" into someone else is gripping and can easily grasps your interest. It's definitely a new take on the saying -- "try being in someone else's shoes".
I hated the ending, but not in the way that you would think. I hated it because I SO did not want it to end that way. In all weirdness I wanted Vee to end up with the other guy. Least to say I cried my heart out for the poor unfortunate boy's fate.
So, our heroine, Vee, has a unique ability/curse of being able to "slide" into other people by touching objects that they have owned or imprinted on (touched in a special way.) In order to avoid seeming incredibly insane, Vee has allowed everyone to believe she is narcoleptic. In this way, she covers for her spells which have a nasty side effect of making her pass out for the duration of the slide.
Well, just when you might be thinking that sliding is all fun and games or you're crafting your Top Ten People to Slide Into Wishlist, enter a complicated best-friendship, an equally complex family life, hero to zero popularity status at high school, a creepy teacher and a murder spree that is circling ever-closer to her sister.
Slide is fast-paced, fun and well-written. The mystery kept me wondering without throwing out to many red herrings or being unbelievable. (Although, it did take a hot minute for Vee to think of her curse as a super power.) Vee is very much a teenager without being to angsty or snarky. I particularly think Hathaway excels at creating the complicated relationships between the characters. Great fast, fun read. Sign me up for the sequel.
Slide tells the unique story of Syliva (Vee), a teen who can slide into other people whenever she passes out. After witnessing a murder from the killer's POV, Vee must discover who the killer is before someone else is next.
The very idea of Slide is what originally drew me to the book, but with that being said I also knew very little about the story. I think in the case of this novel, knowing less before you read it, is actually more. The explanation of Vee's backstory, the slower introduction of the supporting characters and the novel's pacing all help to further the murder mystery plot line and keep you invested in the story.
Vee is a wonderfully realistic character. She's funny, sarcastic and a bit angsty. Her ability has made her jaded but she also doesn't let it control her life. Its a heavy secret to be burdened with, especially because Vee feels that she can't share it with anyone. Its not long before you see what kind of toll that starts to take on her and its not good.
The family dynamic between Vee, her sister Mattie and their father wasn't something I was expecting. Though its a very strained relationship, all three of them care deeply for each other. They've mentally reached a place where they're not sure how to talk to one another anymore, but are desperate to. I think its especially true for the character of Mattie, who comes off rather unlikable several times in the book. So often family relationships are not something YA books explore enough and I was glad to see it done so brilliantly here helping to flesh out all 3 characters personalities.
To my surprise Slide actually features some romance. Its not a main part of the story but it was certainly featured more then I thought it would be. There are two guys (Zane & Rollins) that factor into Vee's life but both in ways you might not expect.
I think author Jill Hathaway blended the paranormal, contemporary and mystery elements extremely well. Even when you can see some of the plot twists coming before they happen, it surprisingly doesn't take too much away from the novel. Its a quick read and one that was extremely enjoyable to read, flaws and all. I think anyone who enjoys YA murder mysteries or characters that possess a slight paranormal ability will likely find Slide the perfect read.

The sliding happens when she comes into physical contact with someone's personal item that's important to them or something they have otherwise imprinted on. One night she slides into someone that has murdered her sister's friend, Sophie. It all happened so fast though, so she's not sure who she slid into. It's up to her to figure out who did it because the murderer made it look like a suicide and Vee can't tell people otherwise because if she told people about her abilities, they'll just think she's crazy. So Vee has no one to confide in - she has to find clues to figure out who the killer was and then somehow point people in the right direction.
Up until that point, sliding had been super inconvenient and involuntary for Vee, but she finds herself able to slide deliberately into people with a little effort. She's able to find out valuable information through the point of view of others, but isn't able to figure out right away who did it. She only has a couple of suspects and can only experience that person's actions during the time she's slid into them. The story had me guessing up until the end of who killed Sophie - great thriller!
I breezed through this book! I thought Vee's ability was really interesting and original. She isn't exactly a bubbly character, but it's understandable given the past experiences she's had. I think she was easy to relate to. I really liked her best friend Rollins, but was bummed that there seemed to be a distance between them. They both have their own secrets though that aren't easily told. It was kinda shocking what was found out about her dad! I'm really excited to see where the next book in the series takes us in Vee's life. I'm thinking that maybe we'll see Vee having more control over her ability to slide and maybe finding out more about her mom!
If you’re looking for a quick read that will hold your attention throughout the whole book, Slide would be it. Not only was the premise of the book intriguing, but add in the completely addictive smooth flowing writing style of Jill Hathaway, and you've got a sure hit.
What was really interesting about this story, was that the identity of the murderer is not revealed until the end of the story. Who doesn’t love a good mystery to solve? I was trying to guess who did it, and was actually surprised with how the story turns out. Although there are parts in the book where the series of events were predictable, the identity of the killer was interwoven into the pages like a professional.
Another part that I really enjoyed about Slide was the many different songs that are mentioned…many of which I absolutely adore! I mean, come on…Smashing Pumpkins?! LOVE! If you don’t know the most awesome music styling’s of this group, you better get on it. I could hear so many of the songs playing in my head a I was reading…each song picked perfectly to match the mood.
Hathaway did a very convincing job of explaining and showing the reader just what “sliding” is, and does an awesome job of twisting the story to allow us a rare glimpse into the eyes of the person of which main character, Vee Bell, has slid into. Not only is Vee such great character to read about, but all the other characters that we are introduced to are equally unforgettable…Sophie, Zane, Rollins to name but a few.
It’s also very apparent that Hathaway has poured a lot of personality into these characters. Not only are we looking for a murderer, but we are also shown the world of suicide and what the cause and effect of this does to the characters in Slide. Hathaway also did a great job of showing us the flipside of being unpopular after being a part of the “in crowd”, and in conjunction with that, she sure can write a totally convincing “mean girl”. As well, she totally pulled on my heartstrings with the thoughts and views of a child after the death of a parent, and the impact it has on them and the rest of the family.
Fans of Lisa McMann’s wake series will totally love fall head over heels in love with Slide, and will also find a new favorite author with Jill Hathaway.
The concept of sliding into someone else’s mind and seeing what they are seeing is pretty cool. However, being the person with the secret that they can do that is a whole lot of trouble. Vee is pretty much on her own with all of this as she can’t easily share what she can do without someone thinking she is crazy. The story is a good mystery/thriller read, which there are never enough of in the YA genre. Vee was interesting to follow around as she is the oddball character with the fact that she has what everyone thinks is narcolepsy, the easiest explanation of her sliding. The other characters are all easy to separate and they don’t mesh into one another, so you get to know a little bit about each of these. I do wish I would have gotten to read more about her best friend Rollins, as he is definitely the most interesting character and his back story is one that I think would be great to hear. The story ties up neatly at the end and everything is explained, but I didn’t have any moments where I was taken aback and heard anything I didn’t expect to be coming.
