Overview

"I can't just storm in and proclaim my intentions. I can't 'steal' you away. I just have to wait and hope that, someday, you'll ask," Tamani said.

"And if I don't?" Laurel said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Then I guess I'll be waiting forever."

Although Laurel has come to accept her true identity as a faerie, she refuses to turn her back on her human life—and especially her boyfriend, David—to return to the faerie world.

But when she is summoned to Avalon, Laurel's feelings for the charismatic faerie sentry Tamani are undeniable. She is forced to make a choice—a choice that could break her heart.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist (starred review)
“Mixing a little bit of Harry Potter and a lot of Twilight, Pike has hit on a winning combination. Yet it is her own graceful take on life inside Avalon that adds a shimmering patina sure to enthrall readers.”
Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)
“Rich with faerie mythology, this book will leave readers clamoring for the next installment.”
School Library Journal
Gr 7–10—This sequel to Wings (HarperTeen, 2009) begins with Laurel going to the Academy of Avalon to begin a summer of intensive training as a Fall faerie in order to protect her family from the threat of her troll nemesis, Jeremiah Barnes. The strict faerie social hierarchy begins to wear on her, causing her to question her place in that society. When she goes back to her life in the human world, she constantly feels the strain of wondering when Barnes will make his next move. Her relationship with David, her human boyfriend, has deepened, but she still feels ties to Tamani, her faerie sentry, and she constantly questions where she belongs. In the end, she is forced to choose between her two worlds. Pike develops her world with limited success. While Avalon is slightly interesting, Laurel's time there drags. Pike makes several attempts to explain historical and mythological people and events so they fit into her world—Eve, it seems was a misunderstood faerie—without fully fleshing out the whys or hows. The first part of the book plods and it is only toward the last 50 pages that the action picks up. Fans of the first book likely won't notice the overwrought writing and poor world-building, but others would do well to seek out the many other, better faerie stories.—Necia Blundy, Marlborough Public Library, MA
Kirkus Reviews
In clean, fresh prose, never wilting in momentum as some middle volumes do, this second installment stays fragrant throughout. Laurel's a faerie, and faeries are plants. On her back, a blossom sprouts annually; she binds it down under her shirt to keep the secret. Briefly visiting magical Avalon, where she was born (but which she doesn't recall), she studies plant lore and faerie society. As is traditional in supernatural romance, two boys want her: human David, warm and devoted, and faerie sentry Tamani, sizzlingly attractive and pining for Laurel's return. Trolls stalk and entrap Laurel and her loved ones in the human world, seeking revenge and the gateway into Avalon, while a slick human woman with a special-ops team helps defeat trolls but rouses Laurel's suspicion. As in Wings (2009), Pike brazenly codes physical deformity and asymmetry as evil, and her engagingly clear prose sometimes blunders into floridness when describing Avalon. Among the current cornucopia of supernatural romances (and despite the presumably unintentional humor of a heroine who literally tastes like nectar), though, this one blooms. (Fantasy. YA)

    Spells by Aprilynne Pike

Laurel spends summer vacation in Avalon learning how to be a Fall Faerie, which means she has to learn how to mix up potions. She grows closer to Tamani, a fairy guard and old friend from before she lost her memory, and now she has to choose between him and her human boyfriend. Laurel's mom is having trouble with the fact that Laurel is a fairy. Trolls are back for revenge. Humans are hunting the trolls down and Laurel fears they may also hunt fairies. Spells is a wonderful book. Loved the parts when Laurel went to Avalon, the fairy world; it's so beautiful and perfect there.

    My new favorite series!

love love LOVE this book!! i was a little concerned after reading the first on how it would be more than 2 books but now i am extremely excited! i love how Aprilynne Pike transformed the traditional view of faeries into something beautiful and believable. You really get sucked into the world of Avalon It isn't like other Fae books (like Marr's Wicked Lovely) where its interesting but its confusing and hard to keep up with. Pike makes it simple and captivating. She doesn't spend time with needless detailed pages you're not interested. oh and by the way I'm rooting for Tamani!! Love him! He's probably my favorite guy character out of all the books i have read and if him and Laurel don't get together in the next book even a little bit i just might burst!! the suspense is killing me!! its a beautiful book and an excellent read! can't believe Pike it making me suffer this agonizingly long wait for book three!! i mean goodness!!

    Next book, please~!

Lots of romance, a bit of action. it's a great sequel to a promising debut. Once you get over the obnoxiously familiar love triangle (Ahem.. Twilight, anyone? Thought it seems rather pointless to point that out.), "Spells" turns out to be a really entertaining read. The concept of faeries actually being plants is most definitely refreshing. I mostly like Laurel's character, she's easy enough to relate to. except some of the things she does. kinda annoy me. Or maybe I'm just Tamani-biased..? Regardless, I think Aprilynne Pike is an amazing author; her writing brings back the little girl in her (female) readers. Gawd, the end left me hanging and wanting MORE. I want the next book. I want the next book NOWWWW.

Brilliant sequel to an amazing book!

I was so pleased when I was able to sign up for this book as an ARC. I have been patiently waiting for it to come out so that I could continue the amazing story of Laurel and her new-found faerie blood.

I loved the world of Avalon that Pike explored in this book. The new revelations and rules that Laurel had to deal with took her for a loop and created more internal struggle then ever before. How could human life compete with the new and beautiful life as a Fall faerie?

The characters that were introduced in 'Wings' were explored more in this second novel. Laurel has been thrust into a position of great responsibility and is being torn between her human life and her inherent faerie gifts. David and Tamani's love for Laurel intensified greatly and had me on the edge of my seat wondering which part of her she would follow to decide who she wanted to be with. The chemistry between both these characters and Laurel was so strong and alluring it made me heartbroken at the end when she actually made her decision. Both these guys have amazing qualities that any girl would love, but as in most hard choices in life, Laurel had to be true to herself in deciding which life to lead.

I love the way that Pike writes. I feel like I am actually in the imaginative world that she created through her descriptive and lovely words. And I truly loved the cover of this book. I thought it was creative and enchanting and expressed the dual feelings that Laurel endured during her internal conflict throughout the story. Should she choose to hide her faerie wings in the human world with David, or bring them to full bloom in Avalon with Tamani?

Pike kept me on the tip of my toes the whole book, and then ended with a massive cliffhanger that will undoubtedly leave me suspended on my toes until the next book.

    TAMMI!!!!

I love love love LOVE Tammi<3! He is sooo amazingly sweet!! I have serious issues tolerating David. He only likes that Laurel has wings and is actually talking to him. It is like all his nerd/lonely boy dreams have come true. TAMANI IS SOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!! And he is soooo sweet and i luv him! Cannot wait until the next book!!!!
AND SERIOUSLY HOW AWESOME ARE TAMMI'S GREEN STREAKS?!?!?! they are really awesome.
One more thing: how can David not see that Chelsea is in love with him? I mean seriously he is too focused on his really creepy obsession with the fact that there are faes in the world.
    Go Tammi! <3 :)

    I live here! Haha

I read this book and Wings because alot of people at my school were reading it because it took place in our tiny little town! I know exactly where Orick is but I live in Crescent City, the lighthouse is really here and I drove on Pebble Beach Drive today haha it's totally cool to read a book about where I live :) Both Wings and Spells were good books and I'm looking forward to the next book!

Not a bad read - worth the time

This book opened up the world of Avalon and you finally felt like you can get a grip on where the story is maybe going. Its edgy, dramatic, has some simple romance in it with a love triangle of course.

    Its a fun simple read.

Spells was just as engrossing and lovely as the first book. I ad

Spells was just as engrossing and lovely as the first book. I adore this take on fairy mythology. It’s enchanting, unique and filled with the kind of things that I love to day dream about – fairies, flowers, castles, and houses made of trees. The pace that Aprilynne reveals the mythology is perfect. Your immediate questions are answered, but then you realize you now have ten more! Not only that, but Laurel is discovering everything with you. It’s so easy to relate to her feelings of being an outsider and not truly belonging. I found it so poignant and beautiful.

Even though I was reading this for the second time, I couldn’t put this book down until I got to the end. It just captivates me. The chemistry between Tamani and Laurel is amazing. I mean, there’s a love triangle and this other guy, David, but seriously. Tamani is so heart-breaking, lovable, and irresistable. I’m addicted to this series.

    Good book

This is a great series, but i Laurel needs to stop leading tamini on and just make her mind. She also needs to make her about college or avalon. But besides that its a great book.

In this sequel to Wings, Laurel studies in Avalon during her sum

In this sequel to Wings, Laurel studies in Avalon during her summer vacation. She is drawn to Tamani but angry that in the faerie world, he must adhere to his station in life and, among other things, walk slightly behind her. Laurel's frustration over her lack of skills in mixing potions and creating sugar vessels is typical of a teenager but she perseveres as she knows those skills may later save her life. A charming party in Avalon is described in detail, the reader being as enthralled as Laurel. In a twist from the first book, David is less likeable as he jumps to conclusions and refuses to see things as they really are. For Laurel's part, she needs to stop the merry-go-round of David-Tamani-David. Is she going to live in the human world or the faerie world? A decision is made at the end of this book but I'm not going to break it to you!
