-As planet Earth becomes uninhabitable, a small group of young astronauts become the last hope for the continuation of the human race...-

"Staying the Hand of God" tells a story that begins "two and a half billion years ago" and doesn't end. It gives us a very decent summary from the beginning of our solar system, including the various catastrophes that altered life forms throughout our natural history. All that background information is a critical part of the story, and leads us to the year 2014, when "the Earth began to get restless and show its ugly side, just as the worries of the Mayan Apocalypse of 2012 were finally subsiding." All manner of natural disasters occurred: earthquakes of a magnitude never before witnessed by man; volcanism so dramatic that entire islands were subsumed; oceanic rifts opening up, sending massive amounts of toxic gases into the atmosphere. It was as if the Earth was getting tired of mankind. Scientists predicted the Earth might remain habitable another 100 years or so, before man became victim to the next natural wave of extinctions. It was globally agreed the only hope was to send a contingent of exceptional young people to another planet 50 light years away. Significant cooperation around the world facilitated numerous inventions, and solved seemingly insurmountable challenges. In the end, the new colony was launched. But from that point on, just about everything went wrong.
I found this story to be very absorbing, and I did not want to put it down until I finished it. The characters were so well-developed they were genuine people to me. The plot, and the several sub-plots, became very personal to me, and I had an abiding interest in the outcome. No spoilers and this book ended very well in spite of the almost continuous difficulties faced along the way. I highly, recommend it. It is suitable for all ages, from 8 to 80, and will be enjoyed by all.
