Overview

The short story that inspired Jennifer Weiner’s forthcoming novel The Next Best Thing.

Ruth has left her job writing for a hit television show for reasons she’d rather not discuss and is supplementing her increasingly dwindling savings with freelance writing projects—namely, helping anxious high school students craft a perfect college essay and lonely souls craft captivating online dating profiles. When she’s not working, she’s swimming—lap after lap at the local indoor pool, in a desperate attempt to wash away the sting of professional failure and heartbreak that she can’t seem to shake. It takes an unexpected client to show her that appearances can be deceiving, and that sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply dive back in.

    Hate that it's so short

I love all of this author's book so i was excited when i saw a free book available. Just got a nook so i am still a little upset when i see a book is only 60 pages or so, just not used 2 it. Story is good but hated that it ended right when it was getting good.

    Interesting....

Liked it a lot, but hated the ending. Left you hanging. Wish it was longer so you would know all works out in the end.

    Highly recommend - gotta luv

Once again B&Ns fishing software appealed to my impulse buying weakness and I'm happy to add this author to my Nook panel and Great Read! shelf(: and begin my journey of reading Jennifer Weiner stories! Swim's character, Ruth, makes me feel perfectly fine for having my unhealthy appreciation for sarcasm. Hat's off to Ruth's 1-liners and comedic/sarcastic timing! Another thing about me is that it doesn't take a lot to evoke an emotional response from me, but it definitely takes an honest writer. She made me pause my reading with that heat and contracting you get in your throat right before your eyes well with tears. She articulated that awkward feeling when you realize your perceptions were wrong about someone to the point you write them off or don't give them your best and also when you expect others to have perceptions about you, maybe even brace for it. But she went further and allowed them to dialogue about it. With only 2 sentences of conversation it will make you look back at those moments no matter if you were dishing it out or receiving it and think whether you were brave enough to acknowledge/sincerely apologize or sincerely accept the apology and move forward.

    Love

Such a good short story! Very well written. It is meant to be a prequel to the book which is featured after the short story. Very good!

    Disapointed there wasn't more.

Yes, this was advertised as a prequel/sequel to a larger work. I should know by now I am going to be disapointed by the fact that the story is left unfinished.

    Good read!

This book held my interest, and while i was expecting the whole 70 pages to be the book, it does not dissapoint.

    Brilliant Marketing Concept

I loved reading the short story, and if I hadn't already pre-ordered the book that was issued 7/3, it would have made me order it because I loved the characters so much. I look forward to starting the book (as soon as I've finished the two others I'm currently reading). Thanks for the freebie -- hope other writers figure that tactic out. We love it!
