Gr 4-7-Donald Jenkins, a seventh grader from a working-class family in Hudson City, NJ, has decided to join the wrestling team. Despite the frustration of losing every day in practice, this small and wiry youngster is determined to succeed. However, Donald's quick temper and aggressiveness are not enough to beat his opponents, as he soon learns after losing his first two matches. He must begin to think on the mat and follow through in order to be victorious. Predictably, Donald eventually succeeds and begins to feel more like a member of his team. Although the author presents several scenarios that could offer more depth to the protagonist and overall story, none of them are explored. This is strictly series fare for sports enthusiasts and struggling readers.-Michael Giller, South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities, Greenville Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

"Takedown" is an interesting novella (short novel) about a young middle-school wrestler who has to come to grips with his short temper and how to become a better wrestler. Boys who are interested in wrestling will enjoy the characters who are relatable to real life situations and how one's behaviour can get one into trouble if not controlled. He must learn patience as well and he'll find that as he wrestles in more tournaments, the better he gets when he concentrates. He not only wrestles for sport but with his temper.

I wrestled when I was young and this novel brought back memories of what it was like. It's also a great research tool for me as I plan to write one of my own. This also teaches young wrestlers that it's okay to do your best at your chosen sport and how to control one's temper as the protagonist has a short one. It's a brisk and quick read and fulfilling at the end. All you young wrestlers out there should read this book.
