This delightfully illustrated book will capture the young reader’s immediate attention. Navigating through this volume is easy and fun. The section about what to do before cooking is easy to understand, and complete with colorful, detailed illustrations. The absent table of contents does not hinder the eager and engaged reader. Ingredients for each recipe are listed, along with a picture of the food drawings. Numbered step-by-step directions walk the reader through the preparation. Pictures of each step are included for each recipe. Healthy ingredients like fruit, nuts, and yogurt will guarantee that parents will be happy with the recipes included here. Whether it is skewered fruit, chocolate covered strawberries, or watermelon soup, parents will not mind if the young cook in the family prepares these desserts for the family. An oversight is the missing information about the number of servings each recipe makes, but the recipes are such fun that the reader will make them regardless. Following the recipes are three additional sections: the illustrated words to know section, the additional resources section, and a color wheel of the five basic food groups. A charming book filled with healthy recipes, helpful food preparation tips, and information a beginning cook will appreciate, and perfect for the young reader. SYNOPSIS: Are you hungry for some delightful desserts? From staples like brownies and cheesecake to new foods like “watermelon soup,” children will learn how to make delicious desserts with a parent’s help. INTENDED AUDIENCE: kindergarten through third grade WHY I LIKE THIS BOOK: You would not believe how difficult it is to create a good cookbook for the youngest children, but Segarra and Curto have done it. This book is much more than a collection of recipes, but a good overview of how to become a “Little Chef.” The book includes a “Before You Start Cooking” section with sound advice on preparing to cook, like washing hands, donning an apron and reading the recipe thoroughly. “Words to Know”  in the back uses pictures to show children what key kitchen terms mean, for example “separate” (eggs) or “line” (a baking sheet). It also shows children pictures of kitchen equipment that they might not be familiar with. Best of all, each recipe includes an illustrated ingredients list and step-by-step instructions. Finley, who can’t read yet, was able to look at the recipe, point to each picture, and describe what we would do in that step. I can’t wait to check out the other recipes in the series: Fun Party Foods, Pizza and Pasta, and Yummy Snacks. SOURCE: The publisher provided a copy of this book for advanced review purposes

I received an advance review copy of this book from the publisher. It contains great simple dessert recipes my kids will be able to do without too much help from me. They're anxious to make one so I promised they could try one of the recipes over the weekend. They love to help me in the kitchen but most of my cookbook recipes are too complicated for them. Cute illustrations too! I will probably purchase another book in this series when it comes out.
