Overview

You have to give credit to Walter Murphy for being enterprising enough to put the type of classical spin on disco that he did with "A Fifth of Beethoven," but unfortunately the trick was carried just a little too far. It's people like Murphy and records like "Disco Duck" that give disco a bad name and provide ammo for the haters of the often thrilling -- and unsurprisingly enduring -- style of dance music. The Best of Walter Murphy: A Fifth of Beethoven includes titles such as "Toccata and Funk," "Dance Your Face Off," and "Flight '76," which, naturally, gives the dancefloor treatment to "Flight of the Bumble Bee." The titles tell you all you need to know. Songs like these can be filed with Rick Dees' "Disco Duck" and Meco's "Star Wars Theme" under novelty. The remainder of these selections fall into ballad and fluffy pop territory. It's all lightweight goo. ~ Andy Kellman
