Overview

In this antidote to heavy-handed advice books written by parenting "experts" who have gotten too big for size 2T britches, The Honest Toddler provides an indispensable manual to parenting that places the toddler's happiness front and center. Outrageously confident and sweetly indignant, The Honest Toddler tackles everything from preferred toddler foods (unbroken crackers and undiluted juice), unconditional love (accept them as they are-pants or no pants), sleep and potty training methods (none), play date etiquette (mi casa es not su casa) and the proper response to random aggression at the playground (embrace it. Park justice is messy but swift). The result is a parenting book like no other, one that will leave moms and dads laughing, and maybe crying, as they recognize their own child in the ongoing shenanigans of one bravely honest toddler.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Thanks to large Twitter and Facebook followings, Laditan outed herself as the mind behind The Hon-est Toddler to write a compilation of the cheeky child's musings on ideal parenting methods. Far from being a basic parenting guide, or really any kind of parenting guide, Laditan writes from the perspec-tive of the toddler who is best kept in check with candy and immediate capitulation to any and all de-mands. She nudges parents to take a skeptical view of currently-popular parenting guides and child-rearing techniques while musing on universal experiences of little ones such as the difficulties of ac-cepting mom's alone time and social media's influence on toddler food and clothing: "When you shower alone, you hurt your toddler's feelings and damage her spirit," and "Pinterest not only distracts parents from their number one job, it directly hurts toddlers by threatening their lifestyles." Her self-indulgent little angel is also unremittingly anti-infant and discourages the acquisition of them. Laditan also offers realistic problem-solving techniques and snappy answers for questions that are bound to come up again and again. Parents who can recognize the absurdity and humor in everyday life—and are comfortable with their roles and choices—will laugh out loud. (May)

Mommy

"You're out of control."

Daddy

"Did you hide my phone?

Grandma

"This is the best thing I've ever seen or heard of."

Chill. Parents and parenting experts alike, just chill. Now, clutch your crackers and laugh along with listeners of Laditan's opinionated, pants-phobic toddler as he answers questions from Laditan's many Facebook and Twitter followers, plus offers spunky advice on how to be a better unpaid intern to one's child. How to get out of a cereal-tempting grocery store with eardrums intact? Ask Honest Toddler. (Goldfish crackers, anyone?) Narrator Kyle McCarley gives the material an extra oomph that's the vocal equivalent of a romp through the playground. VERDICT This refreshing change of pace from overly serious parenting titles is highly recommended. ["Some 'advice' is funnier than others, and this is unessential from a collection development standpoint," read the less impressed review of the Scribner hc, LJ 8/13.]—Kelly Sinclair, Temple P.L., TX
