The magic of Ryan's best work is missing from this perfunctory effort, which kicks off the Montana-set Copper Creek Cowboys series. The contemporary reunion romance between Ash MacKenzie and Brenna Crane offers little that is new. Ash, the first son of a legendary rancher, leaves behind his sweetheart, Brenna, to strike out on his own. He returns home a decade later following the murder of his father and learns that his onetime love is engaged to an ambitious government official. The murder is not the focus of the suspense subplot; by the story's midpoint it becomes clear that sweet, kind, and loving Brenna is in grave danger. Though the MacKenzie family dynamic is a strong point and Ash and Brenna share a nice chemistry, Ryan (aka Ruth Langan) does a poor job of foreshadowing true colors of Brenna's fiancé and an even worse one maintaining the secrecy of the villain's identity. I've read another RC Ryan book and enjoyed it and this one was definitely the same. The beginning of the book, we see Ash interacting with his father, and it wasn't good at all. Quite honestly, I thought Ash's dad was a gigantic jerk. I don't blame for Ash leaving for a decade. Fast forward to present day. Ash is back in Copper Creek because his father was murdered. Throughout the story, we are shown that his father wasn't always a hardass. He's starting to realize this, with the help of Brenna. From the point they see each other again, it's blatant that the connection they had previously is still there and the pull is hard to deny. Once Brenna realizes the jerk she was with was not who she wanted to be, the story really started to take off. Bad things start happening to the couple whenever they are together, which makes everyone think that Ash's father's killer is out to get Ash. Things go from weird coincidences to craziness which had me breezing through the story as fast as I could. Between the mysteries, twists, and the love story, this book had me glued to the pages. And I loved the secondary characters and after reading the little snippet from the next book, I cannot wait to get my hands on it. The Copper Creek Cowboys is going to be a very enjoyable series.

good family saga, murder mystery; a little kissing and not much else; if you're looking for a hot and heavy romance, this isn't it; I'll probably read the next book when I'm in the mood for a good family drama

The Maverick Of Copper Creek is the first book in an all new western romance series. At the age of nineteen Ash MacKenzie left home after one too many fights with his Father, Bear MacKenzie, eventually settling down on his own ranch in Wyoming. The story skips forward ten years and we're there when Bear is shot and killed by an unknown assailant, when Ash hears the news he rush's home to Montana and the family ranch that he hasn't been back to once since the day he left, running into his best-friend and first love Brenna, he discovers that she's now engaged and has moved on with her life, after seeing her Ash realises that his feelings for her haven't changed one bit. With the mystery of Bear's murder and with no idea of a motive in why he was killed, suspects are hard to find, there also seems to be someone targeting Brenna, with no enemies that she's aware of and the incidents only increasing and getting worse, will Ash and Brenna discover who is behind all this before someone's life is lost? I've become a big fan of western romances lately and this is another great addition to the genre, with a great cast of characters who all gather when there's somebody in need and made this book a joy to read. I look forward to further books in the series and of course more of the MacKenzies.

4 stars The Maverick of Copper Creek was entertaining. It had a family of characters that I loved and would enjoy seeing more of them. It was full of drama, action, mystery and romance. It had a few love scenes that I skipped over. It also has lots of food that made me hungry. Ash MacKenzie left home ten years ago because of a fight with his father. Now he has come back for his father's funeral. He left behind his best friend Brenna Crane. He has his own ranch in WyomingB now. Brenna Crane is engaged now to someone else. Brenna works her ranch and is a artist. She had a tough childhood. The day that Ash comes back to Copper Creek first person he sees is Brenna and someone tries to run them over. No one knows who is trying to kill them and who is the target. With Bear MacKenzie's murder and will comes surprises for the MacKenzie family. Bear was a tough father to his two sons. He has a big Montana ranch. He left behind Willow his widow. Ash oldest son. Whit youngest. Griff surprise. Mad his father who is in a wheelchair. Myrna his long time housekeeper and cook. Brady his forman. I hope Griff and Whitt get their own book. I would love to see these characters again. I was given this ebook to read from Net Galley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing). In return I agreed to give honest review of The Maverick of Copper Creek.
