Editorial Reviews

Roland Green
This stout volume edited by the author of "To Shining Sea" contains 31 capsule biographies of major naval leaders of World War II. They include the strategists (Yamamoto, Cunningham, King, and Nimitz) as well as tactical leaders of the various naval specialties--carrier warfare, submarines, destroyers, antisubmarine action, amphibious operations, even such odd activities as codebreaking. The biographies constitute a major addition to World War II naval literature, for all the biographers are literate, knowledgeable, and balanced. The tome is limited, however, to the British, American, and Japanese navies and also (for reasons of space) to only the wartime careers of the officers, some of whom did more after the war (e.g., Arleigh Burke) than during it. Nonetheless, highly recommended.
