A fascinating, lavishly-illustrated (some 600 b&w photographs--many never before published) chronicle of the evolution of both baseball and American society, from Simpson Younger's participation on the first "mixed" college team in 1867, to Jackie Robinson's breaking the major leagues' color barrier after WWII, to the final decline of the Negro Leagues in the 1950s. Wes Lukowsky
In recent years, there has been growing interest in the now-defunct Negro Baseball Leagues. Major league teams have held tributes to former league members, and 11 of them have been elected to baseball's Hall of Fame. Dixon, formerly an administrator with the Kansas City Royals and presently a director of the Negro Leagues Museum in Kansas City, and coauthor Hannigan have compiled an enthralling history of the leagues and their outstanding players. The text, peppered with anecdotes, humor, and excerpts from newspaper accounts, establishes the alternative baseball universe in which the leagues flourished; the hundreds of black-and-white photos clarify it. Though it was the white leagues' racism that necessitated the existence of the Negro leagues, this book is never a diatribe about what should have been. Rather, it's a celebration of what was and the people who made it worth remembering.
