Overview

"It will get worse before it gets better," I heard the full-bosomed tarot card reader tell my husband, who was being investigated for raping one of his drum line students.

Two weeks later, my husband of 11 years was officially charged with forcing himself on his student, and the crime was reported in detail in the newspaper. I wanted to categorize the whole mess as a foolish choice made by my husband. What I simply could not absorb -- even when it was presented to me in the black and white of a dispassionate newspaper story -- was the impact of his sexual encounter with a high school senior in my home while I was out of town.

The fortune teller was right. It got worse. And the "better" was nowhere in sight.

Author Monica Lee explores themes of fidelity, faith and justice in "The Percussionist's Wife: A Memoir of Sex, Crime & Betrayal," the true story about the demise of a marriage after revelations of adultery and criminal sexual conduct. In a perverse age when politicians hide children bred by their mistresses and coaches prey upon their charges, "The Percussionist's Wife" is a modern parable on the nature of betrayal and atonement for those who have endured the shame and mystery of unspeakable secrets.

Monica Lee, a former journalist and writer, draws on her skills as a daily newspaper reporter and relies on the police evidence file to recreate her husband's ongoing philandering with his students throughout their marriage and to illustrate how she coped -- or didn't -- with the criminal charges against him.

Meet the Author

Monica Lee is a personal historian, blogger and writer whose work has appeared in the Middletown Journal and St. Cloud Times and marketing materials for Creative Memories and Homemade Gourmet. She lives in northern Illinois with her second husband.

In the '90s, Lee was the editor-in-chief at the St. Cloud State University Chronicle, a daily newspaper reporter for four years at the Middletown (Ohio) Journal and a copy desk editor for four years at the St. Cloud (Minn.) Times. As a reporter, she covered city council meetings, murder trials, hundreds of community events and the U.S. National Hot Air Balloon Championship in 1992. In addition to writing literally thousands of news stories during her time in Middletown, she wrote a weekly entertainment column. During her time as a reporter and editor, she earned several awards including a Well Done from Gannett Newspaper Division, second place citation from the Minnesota Associated Press Association, Minnesota Newspaper Association General Reporting Award and was named a Society of Professional Journalists Outstanding Graduate in Journalism. She relied on her experience gathering information and interviewing sources to write 'The Percussionist's Wife."

For the past four years, Lee has been blogging daily about life's ephemera at Minnesota Transplant (http://minnesotatransplant.wordpress.com/), a blog is about her everyday life as a former Minnesotan, transplanted into a tiny suburb of Chicago. A news junkie who loves books, she enjoys Major League baseball and discussions about spirituality, politics and culture. And she loves a good recipe, usually accompanied by a bad picture. Like the Farmers' Almanac, her blog contains "bits of logic, formulas for good cookery, weather prognostications, humor, poetry and odds and ends designed for your enjoyment and edification."

It had been awhile since I'd read a book that I couldn't put down--but I didn't want to stop reading--I both started and finished The Percussionist's Wife on the same day! I connected with Monica Lee's message of learning to live authentically. Very well-written!
