Preparing the Foundation

When we were in school, there were the things we enjoyed--making friends, being exposed to new ideas, learning from exceptional teachers. Then there were the things we hated--reading textbooks, writing term papers, pulling all-nighters. We figured, when we get out of school, that will be it. No more textbooks, no more term papers, no more final exams, no more homework.

But unfortunately, that is not it. That's not the way the world works. Even after school there is still more homework, albeit an altogether different kind.

Adult homework is preparation.

As far as I'm concerned, you can never do enough of it. Whatever endeavor you have entered, whatever field you have chosen, you should never walk into a business meeting without studying. Or a sales conference without researching. Or a theatrical play without rehearsing. Or a football game without practicing.

Otherwise, you're asking for a passport to failure.

Preparation is the foundation of this book, material that took forty-six years to research and three months to write. More important, it is the foundation of success.

The difference between someone who is successful and someone who isn't is not about talent. It's about preparation. So much of what successful people do--knowing the competition, making their luck, being equipped to take risks, overcoming adversity, dealing with success--is tied to the powerful principle of preparation. It enables people to move ahead, stay ahead, and live ahead. It is why, in this book, it bats leadoff, top of the order. Nothing you do is as important.

Through the years, what I've always learned, andalways had reinforced, is that the way you go about your homework translates into the way you wind up performing. Being ready for any challenge in business or life provides the cross-hairs to take dead aim at the heart of success.

Compare it to selling a plot of land. If you haven't done all the possible research on it and the surrounding area, if you're not right on top of all the pertinent information, then you might struggle to close the deal. All of a sudden you're meeting with the buyer and he might say, "Hey, this lot that sold two miles down the road, what did it sell for?" If you don't know, you may have just lost the sale.

It's like I tell our team all the time: We have one chance to be successful on Sunday, and one chance only, and that is if we have the most thorough week of preparation possible. We start even with the competition on Sunday. But we get ahead of them Monday through Saturday.

When I was in San Francisco, some of those players had won three or four Super Bowls, yet they practiced at a premium level every day. Now we do the same in Denver. Other teams might feel like they can slack off from time to time, but with our team--with any winning team or organization--there is no other way, You have to practice at game speed. If you don't, then how do you expect to play perfectly on game day?

It is why our practices are demanding. We go through every conceivable situation and how we should respond. We work on visualization, going over every detail. We run each play 100 times in our minds. That way, whatever happens in the game, we've already seen before. If our team is facing a third down and 1 yard to go during the game and we have prepared for it during the week, we will be confident we are going to convert it.

We want our players to be so disciplined that their reaction is instinctive. No one can just wave a magic wand on Sunday, give a great pregame speech, and expect to go out there and win one for the Gipper. But if you approach things on a day-to-day basis, then you have a chance for greatness. And the only way to reach this level is to never let up. Always expecting the best forces you to operate at a higher level.

The other thing we do is run plays until we do it right. When I was in San Francisco, 49ers quarterback Steve Young used to call me "Mr. Let's Do It Again." But if we didn't run the play perfectly, the way it was supposed to be run during the game, sorry, but we were going to do it again.

We've adopted the same approach--but not nickname--in Denver. During our preparations for Super Bowl XXXIII against the Atlanta Falcons, the players felt like they had our game plan down just the way we wanted. It got to the point where the players were saying, "Get us away from these coaches! Let us just play already."

The Wednesday before the Super Bowl, we were crisp. Not once during practice did the ball touch the ground. We were in sync, we were in tune, every pass was right on the money. John Elway was conducting his orchestra like few things I have ever seen during my coaching career.

Watching John throw perfect pass after perfect pass, a memory hit me out of nowhere. I looked over to our offensive coordinator, Gary Kubiak, who was with me in San Francisco for the 1994 season, the year the 49ers won their fifth Super Bowl.

"Hey, Gary," I asked, sidling up next to him. "What does this remind you of?"

"Steve Young," Gary said. "That Thursday practice, boss."

That Thursday practice was when the 49ers were preparing for Super Bowl XXIX against the San Diego Chargers. We were crisp. Not once during practice did the ball touch the ground. We were in sync, we were in tune, every pass was right on the money. Steve Young was conducting his orchestra like few things I had ever seen during my coaching career.

And Steve, just as we suspected he would, carried over his perfect preparation from Thursday to. . .

    "Inspiration"

Inspiration. "The inspiration of the almighty gives man understanding". "The greatest inspiration is often born of desperation". Inspiration comes from the heart and soul of the wise who have created happiness for themselves that builds from their success and dreams. I have just finished reading the book, Think Like A Champion, which was written by a two time super bowl champion and head coach of the Washington Redskins, Mike Shanahan. It's an auto-biography of his career and background life that has determined his fate and where he is today. The book was written to inspire children, or people anywhere, to follow their dreams and to list some of those steps than can help them grab their dreams. He explains how never quitting can affect your life to the core and how it can develop into something that may have seemed impossible. One of his quotes states on page one, "Let's get one thing straight right now, before we go any further: If I can achieve the level of success I have, you can, too." He was just a regular guy with a passion to play football and inspires one another to follow your dream and that if you put your heart into place with an extraordinary amount of effort, you can catch your dream too.
The author of this book uses an extensive amount of exposition and flashbacks to help explain to the reader what he dealt with and how he never gave up even when his dreams were crushed. One significant flashback that he explained a lot was about his college years playing football. He tells about how he waited for days for them to call him to see if they picked him up from the draft. He never got a call back, but he didn't let the obstacle get in his way. Than to make matters even worse, he got injured by being tackled right in his kidney and he was rushed to the hospital where they removed his kidney and told him he could never play football again. It crushed him knowing that you can't play the sport when you put so much heart and passion into the sport. So, what he did with this, he thought of a way where he can still do something to get involved in the game. He sates, "But Football, with all due respect to my parents, had become my life. Now that I couldn't play, I needed to find some other way to stay involved in the game." He decided he was going to be a football coach, but you first have to be an an assistant. Well his long journey started in Norman, Oklahoma in the University of Oklahoma. I can tell you that his road to success had various bumps throughout his career and getting to where he is right now, but it was worth it. I mean look at him now. Talk about persistent and never giving up. He fought for what he wanted and there was never any doubt in his head that he wouldn't make it. He chased his dreams with everything that he had even though he started off with nothing. Something I noticed throughout the book was the authors perspective. All of his thoughts on life came from his perspective and point of view. He experienced everything he explains in the book and he's his own witness. His perspective on life is you can't cheat life, but you can get anywhere in life without cheating. Hard work pays off and this book shows what it takes to move forward. The author states, "Champions thrive on such challenges. And they excel at finding ways to see the limits stretched." Hes trying to say that even though you can do something, you should put effort and hard work into everything to not just get what you wanted, but mor

Suddenly a Denver Broncos Fan for 2003

If you're not a Denver Broncos fan you will be after reading MIKE SHANAHAN'S inspiring autobiography/motivational book. And if you're one of those sad members of Raider Nation, this will cure you of your illness. There are little snipets from John Elway, Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Terrell Davis. You will learn how these great stars of the game pushed and fought their way to the top, and how you can too. Mike writes like he's your personal friend and coach -- you'll feel like you know him as a friend and you'll want to write back telling him how much you admire him and you that you are now a Bronco! Win another Super Bowl Mike. I believe in you and i now believe i too can do anything i dream of. And about Al Davis, give the money to the Oakland School district Al or i'll start a personal campaign to do it for you, baby. Go Broncos. Win a third Super Bowl Mike, write another book.
