Overview

Between the pages of this book lies the secret to the best-tasting chocolate in all the world. I promise, your taste buds will tingle. Your palette will sing! Oh no, have I accidentally tempted you to read this book? I will warn you, however, the most delicious things are never good for you...and this story is particularly scrumptious!

In this tooth-rotting adventure, Cass's mom has been kidnapped by the evil dessert chef and chocolatier, Señor Hugo! The ransom...the legendary tuning fork. Can Cass and Max-Ernest find the magical instrument before it's too late? Will they discover the evil secret ingredient to Señor Hugo's chocolate success?

If you're tempted, take a taste, but just remember...this book is not good for you.

Editorial Reviews

The scent of trouble and chocolate are in the air in this contrarian Pseudonymous Bosch paranormal mystery. Cass's mother has been kidnapped by that devilish dessert, Señor Hugo. To get her freed, Cass and Max-Ernest must procure the highly vaunted but seldom-seen tuning fork. This Bosch bonanza will keep the nightlights burning.
VOYA - Kelly Czarnecki
Cass and Max-Ernest are at it again, working together to solve a thrilling yet sometimes dangerous puzzle against the Midnight Sun. The duo, their friend Yo-Yoji, and Cass's mother are invited to a restaurant, El Castillo de la Noche, where Cass's mom is kidnapped by none other than Midnight Sun members. Through good old-fashioned research, Cass, Max-Ernest, and Yo-Yoji find themselves at a zoo with a secret entrance to a chocolate plantation where Cass' mother is being held prisoner and where the Midnight Sun has taken up quarters and a new and tasty project. Subplots including Cass finding the box she supposedly arrived in as a baby at her two grandfather's store to Max-Ernest's parents getting along better help keep the story moving. Many references to chocolate, including the coveted tuning fork that can turn any food or drink into what the owner wishes, will keep readers hungry for more. As in the previous two companion books, Lemony Snickett-like humor and decoding puzzles through research and handy gizmos like the Professor Layton video-game series will not disappoint loyal readers. Chocolate games and recipes are given in the back of the book, providing great ideas for library programs. Twists and turns in the ordering of the chapters give the author time for commentary and a choose-your-own adventure for readers who will still be on the edges of their seats at the end for the Secret to be revealed. Grinding through this book you will encounter more than a chocolate mystery of your own but a different chocolate mystery. While joining Cass and friends for their exciting chocolate adventure you meet many unknown villians along with many other knowns. Looking for the legendary Tuning Fork(shh!)while Cass' mother is swooning her life away with a stranger in a great smelling kitchen of "fish". Many "clown camps" and secrets unknown to a certain person are shared in this search for a "magic weapon". White gloved villians and monkeys block the path for the chocolate adventurers. Gold buckets clink and evil laughs are shared in a "private' room at the "end" of a thriliing chocolate quest. A test tasting girl is finally freed form her misfortune along with gold pucket poop pickers. Though the monkeys still hang, eating up their life, or what is left of it. This search through a chocolate factory.... read it or have your chocolate haunt you forever. Yummy chocolate!

I really love this series, so I was very happy when this new book came out. There's a few surprises in here that you might have not been expecting, and the ending is a cliffhanger (sorry!) but I still loved this book. The whole series is great. It's so imaginative, and the author is very funny. I highly recommend. ^_^
