School children on a field trip to Mack Nugget's farm save the lives of eight turkeys in this poem based on "The Night Before Christmas."

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The seasonally askew title is just the first sign that Dav Pilkey's Thanksgiving offering is unlike any other. 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving twists Clement Moore's classic Christmas poem into a wacky original tale about eight kids and eight endangered turkeys.
Publishers Weekly
Patterned as a parody of the celebrated Clement Moore poem, this story of eight baby turkeys unfolds with joyous abandon and crackling vitality, as eight children embark on a Thanksgiving field trip that will change their lives forever. They are breathless as they catch sight of Farmer Mack Nuggett for the first time: ``He was dressed all in denim, / From his head to his toe, / With a pinch of polyester / And a dash of Velcro.'' The exuberant turkeys--Ollie, Stanley, Larry, Moe, Wally, Beaver and Groucho--catch the children up in raucous barnyard antics until the merriment is quelled by the sight of the ax. Deeply touched by the turkeys' plight, the children--who have grown mysteriously fatter and have feathers sticking out from under their clothes--board the bus to go back to the city. The next night, family silhouettes can be seen--each with a grateful turkey guest--as ``They feasted on veggies / With jelly and toast.'' This humorous, lighthearted story is adorned with bold, bright illustrations that convey a sense of wacky high-spiritedness sometimes lacking in traditional holiday fare. Ages 4-7. (Aug.)
From The Critics
Pilkey has adapted Clement Moore's classic poem for another holiday. The day before Thanksgiving finds eight boys and girls of various races taking a field trip to a turkey farm. Although Farmer Mack Nuggett seems kind at first, the children eventually discover his horrible plan to kill the turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners. Smuggling the turkeys home with them, the children save the birds, who join eight families for vegetarian dinners. The weakest part of this slapstick offering is the verse, in part because the story isn't at all parallel to Moore's and in part because of the stretches in rhyme to accommodate a pre-existing pattern. Some of the word play will escape children. Similarly, visual humor such as the placement of Farmer Nuggett and the teacher in an ``American Gothic'' pose will remain unappreciated by those too young for Grant Wood. The cartoon illustrations reinforce the story's general silliness but are unremarkable in themselves. Those seeking Thanksgiving humor will better served by Marc Brown's Arthur's Thanksgiving (Little, 1983), while those looking for a human-turkey relationship should dust off Lorna Balian's Sometimes It's Turkey, Sometimes It's Feathers (Abingdon, 1986). --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

    I Also Recommend:

    Good Read for Thanksgiving

A different twist about Thanksgiving. The first reading scared a few of my kinder students simply because of the thought of killing an animal to eat was a little scary. But the children quickly came to love the story. The rhyming text draws the children in to listen for the entire story. It is consistently voted as a re-read with my children. Once again I stress the rhyming words and then we discuss the series of events that happen within the story. Check out the "The Night Before" series of books - promise these will be frequently requested as well.

I loved this book! So did my children and grandchildren.

You can't help but read this book aloud -- it sounds so familiar and you know you have never read it! Then, since you are in the end of the year holidays, you KNOW! - you are reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas". I usually do not like parodies of well known themes, but this book has such wonderful colorful illustrations of characters and events that tell more to the older reader (over toddler age) that are not explicitly in text, and just plain laugh out loud fun to share, that unconsciously knowing the rhythm adds to the enjoyment of reading it. My first, second and preschool grade grandchildren all had fun listening/reading "Twas the Night before Thanksgiving", as did their parents and this Grandma.

    Funny Story for Kids

My 10 year old memorized this story last year at Thanksgiving for a school project. After hearing her rendition, our entire family thought it was a funny story that we needed to have at home to read for the holidays. Mom, dad, 10 year old, 6 year old and 3 year old all enjoy this tale!

    Not for Toddlers

I bought this book w/ the expectation that it would be a cute story for a toddler. Please don't make this mistake! The farmer brings out an ax and says 'These feathery beasts will be chopped up and roasted for Thanksgiving'

    As Cameron Laughs.....

This is a Fantastic and Humerous book! My 3 year old loved it! I read the book each night to him before Thanksgiving about 2 weeks....and each night he looked forward to seeing the school bus going to the field trip and seeing old Farmer Mac Nugget in his Polyester and Velcro!! Too cute and great antics. Highly recommend this to any parent to get their children into Thanksgiving and the love of a child and living.

    Hilarious

This is one of the most hilarious children's books ever. I was a preschool teacher for several years and my students loved this book. Now, my own children love listening to it year round.

    What Kathy Piehl missed.

After reading the book and considering what my 6 yr old daughter and 11 year old son had to say after reading it... I would offer this. It is entertaining to young minds, such as my 6 yr old, that are forming their own opinions on right and wrong. Some of the more advanced adult silliness was picked up by my 11 yr old. If you speak gibberish to a baby the child will only learn chibberish. Plus the book is just plane fun!!!
