Twilight Saga
I found this book at a book fair in 2006 and bought it because it looked interesting. But the second I started it, I didn't like it. I dragged through the whole thing (and even went on to read the entire series!), but didn't like them one bit.
For starters, the writing is elementary. I've found that Meyer uses WAY too many adjectives, way too many adverbs, the sentences are long and wordy, and Bella Swan can't seem to do anything but talk about how glorious Edward is. When she's not talking about Edward's glory, she's complaining about the weather or reading Wuthering Heights. (What normal teenager loves Wuthering Heights?)
The characters are bland and predictable. Bella Swan--completely and totally selfless, smart and intuitive, in advanced placement classes, modest and says she is not exceptionally pretty (except she is), and hangs out with good kids. Mary-Sue. Edward Cullen is pretty much the male counterpart of Bella. Selfless, smart, not very handsome (except he is), only has eyes for Bella, hates himself, etc etc. It's boring, and immediately you know what they'll do and say and in what direction the book is going to go. That's never fun--readers like to be kept on the edges of their seats.
Let's move on to the plot. At the beginning, Bella moves herself from Arizona (which she loves) to Washington (which she hates). She says herself that she doesn't have to go, and her mom says she doesn't have to go, and she complains about not wanting to go, but she goes anyway. Why? There's no real reason as to why, and it just makes me confused. Secondly, she falls in love with Edward pretty much the second they meet. And he wants to drink her blood. The relationship they form is extremely abusive (he won't let her see Jacob; he causes her more trouble than it's worth; he keeps her on a short leash; etc, etc). The book is glorifying this relationship when it's clearly NOT something teenage girls want.
In Breaking Dawn, Bella gets pregnant with Edward's child. Um, didn't Meyer state in the last book or two that vampires can't have/create babies? And even if she didn't say that, what is there for Edward to create with? He's dead. There's no blood in his body, which makes an erection impossible; chances are, there's nothing else in there either. So what happened? Also the part where Jacob falls in love with Bella's baby is creepy. Ick.
All in all, the books are awfully written, terribly put together, boring, predictable, and gives vampires and werewolves a bad name. I don't recommend these books at all to those of you who haven't read them. And honestly I'm not sure how Meyer even got published, let alone made millions off the books.
