It was while she was teaching at Tuskagee University that Lane (Clark Atlanta U.) became interested in Margaret Murray Washington (1861- 1925) and other women affiliated with the University's history. She describes her as a mulatto standing in the shadows of her famous husband, but also a prominent figure from the Progressive Era who also sheared a separate slice of success as a selfless educator during the infancy of rural southern education by joining the Tuskagee Institute facility in 1889 and staying steady for 36 years. She also advocated for wider reforms as part of the Progressive movement. The text is double spaced.
