Description: The book is a great guide to the perioperative environment at many levels. The spiral binding makes the book easy to handle. There are over 750 illustrations with specifics on products or equipment. It covers the must know concepts for the surgical environment focusing while on patient and staff safety. The review questions at the end of the chapters help focus on the most important content. Since perioperative patient care is a specialty where highly trained personnel need to be involved in continuous learning; lifelong learning promotes lateral thinking and mental flexibility and to accomplish this, personnel need up-to-date resources. The previous edition was published in 2016 and this book updates many changes that have occurred in the field.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to educate surgical technologists. The objective is worthy as the primary purpose of surgical techs is to assist surgeons during surgical procedures and they must be prepared to anticipate the next step in the surgical procedure and what instrumentation is needed. This demands extensive knowledge of hundreds of different surgical procedures and instruments and the steps and equipment needed to complete them. Books like this one provide an updated resource to assist in the original education and ongoing learning. The book meets the objectives as it covers procedures from those with minimal instrumentation to the more complicated such as robotic, endoscopic, and cardiac. For these reasons the book meets and goes beyond the objective to educate surgical techs.
Audience: The book will educate surgical techs, and faculty will be able to use it as a resource book. Its use can extend beyond surgical tech students to perioperative nurses and even surgical residents. Over 750 illustrations with descriptions of their use in the perioperative setting can be a resource guide for all personnel in the operating room. The text meets its objectives and goes beyond. The list of reviewers is impressive and covers all the primary personnel and credentials in the perioperative setting.
Features: The 750 illustrations are invaluable to learning. Students learn in different ways so including the pictures as well as descriptions appeals to visual learners which is approximately 65% of people. In the online resources the "watch out" boxes highlight need-to-know information which is crucial to learning. No matter how good equipment is, at times it will fail. The troubleshooting tips which highlight common equipment malfunctions empower staff to be proactive to reduce downtime and enhance overall performance. At the end of each chapter there are review questions highlighting important concepts. Each chapter describes various categories of equipment or supplies unique to the surgical setting. The book would benefit from a chapter on emergencies in the operating room such as hemorrhage, latex or other allergic reactions, or malignant hyperthermia. Another topic to cover is how cardiac arrest is handled in the operating room as it is very different than on the units.
Assessment: The book starts with the basic concept and sets the tone for the book. It is helpful for personnel in the operating room, especially as new equipment and supplies come through the door every day. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words and this book is very useful with its large number of pictures. Other similar books like Barry and Kohn's Operating Room Technique 14th Edition, Phillips and Hornacky (Elsevier, 2020) or Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery, 17th Edition, Rothrock (Elsevier, 2022) are more perioperative nursing texts than instrument guides. The pocket guide for surgical instruments is very user friendly as it is a small book. The book's author also authors a surgical instrument text. Surgical Technology: Principles and Practices, 8th Edition, Fuller (Elsevier, 2021) is the text I am most familiar with and used when I oversaw a surgical tech program. The most popular book is authored by the Association of Surgical Technologists: Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist: A Positive Care Approach, 6th Edition (Cengage Learning, 2023). Health care, including surgical care and robotic surgery in particular, is changing quickly, so surgical texts need to be updated every couple of years due to the fast-paced changes.
