Haystak's 2005 album, FROM START TO FINISH, refines the Tennessee native's earnest brand of Southern rap. Much like Bubba Sparxxx, Haystak (born Jason Winfree) proudly claims to be "white trash," conveying tales of rural life over the slick beats of urban hip-hop. Throughout the record, Haystak varies his flow, spitting out swift lyrics one minute and slowly coasting over a laid-back groove the next. As on past albums, Haystak doesn't fill his tracks with numerous guest shots--the only cameo appearances are by fellow Southerners Bun-B and Eightball. Over the course of START TO FINISH, Haystak riffs on his appearance ("I Ain't No Pinup"), urges listeners to "Keep It Southern," and gives a heartfelt ode to "Mama." An underrated rapper who has the skills to compete in the hip-hop big leagues, Haystak takes another step towards fame with this potent, no-frills record.
