About the Author

Lifelong Hendersonian Susan Sommers Thurman began collecting local postcards more than 20 years ago. A teacher and writer, her first published work was Currents—Henderson's River Book, which she coauthored with Gail King. Thurman is the author of over 50 articles dealing with English education, along with a number of study guides, textbooks, and other books. Currently she is an instructor at Henderson Community College.

Henderson author Susie Thurman will be among those featured at the 27th annual Kentucky Book Fair on Nov. 15 at the downtown Frankfort Convention Center.

The book fair, which runs from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. CT, is free and will feature more than 200 authors, artists and illustrators.

Thurman will be signing "Henderson — The Postcard Series," in which she uses more than 200 vintage postcards to tell the colorful story of her hometown. She is an instructor of developmental English writing and reading at Henderson Community College.

This year's Book Fair lineup also includes University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino, who has led three different teams to Final Fours including the 1996 NCAA champions, the University of Kentucky Wildcats.

Other featured authors include Roger Mudd, an icon of CBS; Pulitzer Prize winner Rick Bragg, who returns to sign the third of his homespun trilogy about growing up in the South; Missy Jenkins, a survivor of the Paducah high school shooting; James Reston Jr., Bobbie Ann Mason, Ed McClanahan, Silas House, Frank X Walker, George Ella Lyon, Len Press, David Dick and Sue Wylie.

Abraham Lincoln is this year's theme, which is a prelude to the bicentennial of his birth coming up early next year. Several Lincoln books will be available, including the bestseller by James Swanson about the hunt for Lincoln's killer.

The Book Fair is sponsored by The State Journal, Frankfort's daily newspaper, and co-sponsored by the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives and the University Press of Kentucky.

In its 27-year history, the Book Fair has sold more than $2.4 million in books. The profits are donated to mostly school and public libraries in Kentucky. Those contributions total more than $300,000.
