Overview

Plants have provided a source of antimicrobial agents. Plant based antimicrobials represent untapped source of medicine with great potential. They are effective in treatment of diseases while mitigating many of the side effects. The isolated bioactive cpds can be used as an antimicrobial, blueprint or starting point for their manufacture. This work was on the Kenyan plant, Teclea nobilis Del. from Kerio Valley basin. Powdered dry leaves were extracted in hexane, DCM, EtAc & MeOH. Resulting crude extracts were tested using brine shrimp & other antimicrobial tests. The hexane and DCM extracts were most active. They were subjected to fractionation giving seven cpds using vacuum liquid chromatography (VLC), column chromatography (CC) and thin layer chromatography (TLC). The isolated cpds were kokusaginine (I), 4,8-dimethoxy-7-(3-methylbut-2-enyloxy)furo[2,3-b]quinoline (II), skimmianine (III), dictamine (IV), β-sitosterol (V), lupeol (VI), and flindersiamine (VII). They showed antibacterial activity ranging from mild to moderate activity (from 7-11 mm). The trend exhibited in the crude extracts was maintained by the isolates-gram negative being more susceptible to the extracts.
