An eleven year old son of an Essex County village working class family changes the destiny of the Cane family. The family's mantra of living your life by playing the cards that you have been dealt, never loses it's influence on him. Pre-Victorian values, and society's morays influence how our victim plays his life situations, without indulging in self pity. Rural wits are pitted against street smarts and adult experiences. The world becomes the stage upon which good and bad events unfold, only to be skillfully ridden by our victim, not always above board.
