This reference work by aviation author Fredriksen aims to be an introductory source to the U.S. military aviation inventory from its modest beginnings in World War I through the present day's vast technological astonishments. Each of the aircraft selected from the scores of possible examples is then examined in a short history, with mention of its contribution to the military picture, some details on its construction and numbers, and other selected facts. A single photo is included, with technical specifications. The format is adequate to the initial task, though anything beyond basic interest has to be found in the voluminous cross-referenced suggested reading appendixes. Nevertheless, having singled out the "casual user" and with the goal of being "exacting in scope without being burdensome in detail," this single volume is right on target.
