16th to 18th Century Double-Running Stitch Embroidery Patterns
In this book are various historical embroidery patterns for double-running stitch from different historical sources, including 16th century pattern books and 17th century embroidery samplers. Double-running stitch, also referred to as Spanish stitch in 16th century England, was the earlier form of blackwork embroidery, also known as Holbein stitch. This type of embroidery stitch is iconic because the embroidery is reversible on the front and back of the fabric. By counting the threads, the double-running stitch is a series of two 'journeys'. On the first journey, the pattern is to work every other stitch. Then, on the return journey, fill in the blank spots to create one continuous line. These embroidery patterns are my interpretation of the historic patterns found.
