In the 19th century, German missionary Richard Wilhelm arrived in China and engaged with orthodox Quanzhen Daoism at Mount Lao (Laoshan)-the ancestral sanctuary of the Longmen (Dragon Gate) sect. There, he mastered authentic Quanzhen meditative techniques. Upon returning to Germany, Wilhelm translated The Secret of the Golden Flower into German, with pioneering psychologist Carl Jung contributing a seminal preface.
