About the Author

Born and raised in the famed "Sugar Hill" section of Harlem, Agyei Tyehimba is an educator, author, poet and activist specializing in Black history, student activism, Black Nationalism and education.

As president of the Student African American Society at Syracuse University (1988-1990) Mr. Tyehimba distinguished himself through outspoken, dynamic, and results-driven leadership. In 1989 he spearheaded a successful movement pressuring university administrators to agree to 13 demands designed to strengthen the university's neglected African American Studies Department. Among other things the university agreed to hire an official chairperson of the department, increase funding to acquire additional faculty and graduate assistants, a renovation of the M.L.K. Library, and an agreement to begin a Masters Degree program. In recognition of his leadership, Mr. Tyehimba received the Malcolm X Award for Leadership, the Fannie Lou Hamer Award for Outstanding Service, and the Syracuse NAACP Freedom Fund Award. In the academic arena, he received the HEOP Outstanding student award, and was later named to the National Dean's List as a graduate student at Cornell University (where he was president of the Africana Graduate Student Association).

Agyei has delivered dynamic opening speeches for such notables as Nikki Giovanni, Naim Akbar, Kwame Ture, Martin Luther King III, Minister Louis Farrakhan, Dr. Betty Shabazz, and Susan Taylor. Agyei's work as a student leader earned him invitations to speak throughout NY state which eventually led Agyei to become a professional motivational speaker during his junior year in college.

In addition to earning a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from Syracuse University, Agyei earned a Masters Degree in African American Studies at Cornell University, and has satisfied the requirements for a second Master's degree in African American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He hopes to complete his Doctorate Degree in the field.

As a former NYC public schoolteacher Agyei co-founded KAPPA (Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy) in the Bronx, NY co-wrote the Essence Bestselling memoir "Game Over: The Rise and Transformation of a Harlem Hustler."
