Description: This book offers a more concise summary of the growing field of cardiovascular and thoracic anesthesiology than many others in the field. The online format adds value, enabling readers to quickly search for a topic. Such information then can be quickly and easily forwarded to students, residents, and colleagues. The only disappointment is that it includes only a one-year subscription to this resource.
Purpose: The purpose is to summarize the field of cardiovascular anesthesiology. The book is intended to provide the baseline knowledge necessary for anesthesiologists or other anesthesia providers who will be providing care for patients undergoing these complex procedures. These are worthy objectives given this rapidly growing field, which requires a wide breadth of knowledge.
Audience: This concisely written book is appropriate for any practitioner of anesthesiology, although it would be most appropriate for cardiovascular anesthesiology fellows or residents particularly interested in this field. It also would be especially helpful for anesthesiologists who hope to care for cardiac anesthesia patients without the aid of additional specific training. The book meets most of the needs of its intended audience, but its conciseness may necessitate additional review of the literature to answer advanced clinical questions. The editors and authors represent a wide variety of experts in the field of cardiothoracic anesthesia from all over the world.
Features: The book has brief summaries of all of the key aspects of patient care, including the preoperative evaluation, intraoperative care, and postoperative care and complications common in cardiac and thoracic surgery. Importantly, chapters on the special aspects of cardiopulmonary bypass, including the inflammatory response to cardiac surgery and myocardial protection, are covered well. While the book includes a summary of anesthesia for electrophysiological interventions, this could be expanded to better cover surgical treatment of atrial fibrillation. Also, the fast growing field of percutaneous valvular intervention is only briefly mentioned.
Assessment: Because of its concise nature, this book could provide quick and fairly thorough baseline knowledge to practitioners of cardiac anesthesia. Overall, it is an excellent review of cardiac and thoracic anesthesiology with easy to use and worthwhile online resources.
