Description: As the computer age has impacted anesthesia practice, this new edition of a comprehensive book on anesthesia equipment is vital. It covers all issues related to anesthesia practice, with special attention to safety and standards.
Purpose: The book sets out to describe the principles of operation including the physics and technological aspects. After the principles are laid out, the applications and limitations are presented. Finally, the clinical and safety relevance is covered.
Audience: Anesthesia practitioners at all levels of training or practice will benefit from this book. The authors are widely recognized authorities in the field.
Features: The first section covers gases and ventilation (from the machine side) and is followed by comprehensive discussions of monitors of systems and patients. A section on computers, alarms, and ergonomics is followed by a discussion of special conditions (such as closed circuit anesthesia). A short section covers airway devices, infusion pumps, and temporary pacemakers. Some topics that are not unique to anesthesia (e.g. extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, cardiopulmonary bypass) are beyond the scope of this book and not included.
Assessment: Understanding Anesthesia Equipment, 5th edition, Dorsch and Dorsch (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2008), is the historic reference in this area, but it is surpassed by the new edition of this book. This is comprehensive, easy to read, and well indexed. The illustrations, including real-life photos as well as graphs and figures, are outstanding. The time had come for an update, and this edition goes above and beyond. It is an outstanding and vital contribution to the field, and a must-have for all locations where anesthesia is administered.

This is a new, multiauthored text that describes the design principles, hazards, safety features, maintenance, and quality assurance of the anesthetic equipment required to give a basic anesthetic. The book aims to provide the trainee or practitioner of anesthesiology with an understanding of the equipment used to provide a basic anesthetic and how it may interact with both the patient and provider, enhancing prevention, recognition, and management of potentially dangerous malfunction. This is an important area, and the authors succeed in fulfilling these aims. This text is written for students and practitioners of anesthesia; this is the proper audience for these topics and the level of discussion is appropriate. The medical student on an anesthesia rotation is unlikely to benefit or be interested. The editors are well known for previous writings and lectures in this area. Many of the authors are previously published in major textbooks and are recognized experts in their areas. There are numerous interesting and clear illustrations adding to the educational value of the text. They also serve to trigger recognition of the equipment discussed, as many readers may not be aware of significant differences between different brands or models of equipment. The number and timeliness of references varies from chapter to chapter, but in general they are well-chosen and up to date, and the many case reports of complications and failures emphasize the importance of properly maintaining and using equipment. Indexing is definitely not exhaustive, but the table of contents is helpful, as is the complete outline available at the beginning of each chapter. The book is attractively bound and the printeasy to read. This book serves as an excellent resource for the anesthesiology resident or practitioner. Although some topics are similarly covered in the major anesthesia textbooks as well as in the specialized monitoring texts, this book is frequently more up to date and detailed, and pulls together a number of topics that previously could be accessed only by reading through several books. It is not a rehash of similar chapters contributed by the authors to other textbooks. The correlation of equipment-related topics with clinical care and anesthetic complications and catastrophes enlivens the technical exposition, and makes the topics interesting to the less technically inclined and useful for those charged with the education of resident anesthesiologists or quality assurance. Some interesting and unusual chapters on the ergonomics of anesthetic equipment and the psychology of vigilance are included, as well as the implications of unusual environments such as hyperbaric chambers and magnetic resonance imaging. When this volume is compared with the various textbooks of clinical monitoring, more discussion of technical principles is found, but advanced clinical monitoring is not covered. Thus, evoked potentials, pulmonary artery catheterization, and transesophageal echocardiography are purposely excluded. Some topics have been excluded that might have been pertinent (such as arterial blood gas measurement, status, and certification of anesthesiology laboratories), but the equipment used in anesthetizing an American Society of Anesthesiologists level I or II patient is very well covered, and this is a worthwhile book for a personal, departmental, or academic library.
