This long-awaited fifth volume of a six-volume set, often called the "Cabeen bibliography" after its first editor, is an invaluable source of information on 19th-century French literature, particularly for beginning scholars. In contrast to the Modern Language Association's standard bibliography or O. Klapp's Bibliographie der Franzosischen Literaturwissenschaft, this volume offers annotated bibliographies and a very selective content. The books, articles, and reviews chosen are predominantly in English and French, and, in contrast to other volumes in the set, unpublished dissertations are excluded (with a few exceptions, mainly biographical works). Following the set's traditional format, the material is presented according to broadly historical divisions, with individual chapters devoted to major authors, groups, and genres. Part 1 covers key writers of the pre-Romantic and Romantic periods as well as theater in the early 19th century; Part 2, which covers the second part of the century, beginning with Baudelaire, features several movements such as symbolism, realism, and the Parnassian poets includes late 19th-century poetry, theater, and prose. The cut-off date for the bibliography is 1989, yet a small number of significant items published after 1989 appear in appended notes.
