LAWRENCE FRIEDMAN is a professor of law at Stanford University. He teaches courses in American legal history and law and society. He is the author of 'A History of American Law,' 'Crime and Punishment in American History,' 'The Human Rights Culture,' and 'Total Justice,' among other works. Friedman recently published 'The Big Trial: Law as Public Spectacle' and 'Impact: How Law Affects Behavior.'
