A Code of the Heart by Jacki Delecki

Miss Amelia Bonnington has been in love with her childhood hero since she was eleven years old... or so she thought until a not-so proper impassioned and unyielding kiss from the not-so honorable and equally disreputable Lord Derrick Brinsley, gave her reason to question the feelings of the heart.
Lord Brinsley, shunned from society for running off with his brother's fiancée, hasn't cared about or questioned his lack of acceptance until meeting the beguiling Amelia Bonnington. One passionate moment with the fiery Miss Bonnington has him more than willing to play by society's rules to possess the breathtaking, red-haired woman.
Amelia unwittingly becomes embroiled in espionage when she stumbles upon a smuggling ring in the modiste shop of her good friend. To prove her French friend's innocence, she dangerously jumps into the fray, jeopardizing more than her life.
On undercover assignment to prevent the French from stealing the Royal Navy's deadly weapon, Derrick must fight to protect British secrets from falling into the hands of foreign agents, and the chance at love with the only woman capable of redeeming him.

What a problem! Although this is a full book, I wasn't satisfied. I understand that the author was trying tolead me into reading her next novel, but her writing style became choppy and I felt rushed. Also the coitus scene was unnecessary, and the timing did not ring true. It was obvious that there was a prior story because there are references in this story. The references did not add anything to this story except to interupt the flow of this story. If you have nothing else to do, this is not too bad. Just read and see what happens!

I am still in love with this author’s Code series!  The romance and the intrigue are balanced so that both make an exciting read that is hard to put down.  I read it in two nights only because I was too tired to finish it the first night. Derrick and Amelia courtship was a little unusual in that Derrick was the one who had to live down a scandal; that is mistaken by the Ton to be a scandal, however.  During the solution of the spy mystery and after Amelia found that she loved Derrick, the secret to Derrick’s mistaken scandal was revealed and all barriers to their happy ever after were done away with.  This is another wonderful historical Regency romantic suspense by a terrific author.

I loved the story! The story was wonderfully told and kept the reader involved with the story line. I loved how Derrick was trying to keep his lady safe, while Amelia was trying to prove that she wasn't a wilted flower and able to pull her own weight in helping out. Amelia never wanted to be involved, yet to help others she joined in to help. The plot lines were never slow and the author was able to keep me interested throughout the whole series (that I read in 1 night).

“A Code of the Heart” is the third book in The Code Breakers Series by Jacki Delecki. I absolutely loved this book. Miss Amelia Bonnington has had an infatuation for her good friend’s brother Michael Harcourt for many years. Everyone in the Ton believes they will marry. But then she meets Lord Derrick Jeremy Randolph Brinsley at a Christmas party (A Christmas Code – Book 2) and every thought of Michael leaves her head. Lord Derrick is one of my favorite characters so far in this series. He is a spy in the British Intelligence Service and is a secondary character in the first two books. Derrick has been shunned by the Ton for running away with his brother’s fiancé years ago. He is the last person that Amelia wants to associate herself with. He is a giant man who has shut himself off from past pain. When he first meets Amelia, sparks of animosity fly between them. He enjoys poking fun at her and calling her Red for her flaming red mane. But by the second day of their acquaintance, Derrick’s true gentle nature comes out. “Touching her lightly with his fingertips, he smoothed her cheek, her lips, and down her throat. He paused where her pulse leapt and bounded under his seductive touch. He put his mouth on hers. She froze, suspended in the sensation of his soft, warm lips. The rest of the world, the war, the ball, vanished.” Even though this is a standalone, I highly recommend reading the full series beginning with A Code of Love.

#3 A Code of the Heart by Jacki Delecki is the 3rd book in the Code Breakers Series. This regency series is full of so many elements that multiple genres are covered (suspense, intrigue, mystery and romance). You will discover things like a codebook, spies, disguises, assassins, kidnappings, near drownings, an opium addict, blackmail, a poisoning, assaults, thievery, smuggling, and a secret weapon. Also included are characters that go through lies, deceit, loss, assumptions, misunderstandings, fun, passion and love. Heroines are wonderfully smart, strong, and brave.

Took me forever to read. While the story was interesting, the dialogue was passionless and stilted.

I haven't read the other books in this series, and I highly recommend you do. While this book is a standalone, the other books help lay the foundation for the characters in this one. That being said, Amelia was...unexpected. She seemed like the kind of woman I don't like to read about in historical romances: flighty, simple-minded, knows only fashion and gossip, is resigned to settling instead of pursuing what her heart desires. Um... Can anyone say "Wrong!"? Time and again, Amelia proved me wrong. There was so much about her hiding behind her pretty smiles and fashionable dresses. She had lioness' heart when it came to things that mattered, and an intelligence that obliterated the "simple-minded" label I'd given her. She could have left her friend's problem alone, could have turned a blind eye to what it would do to her friend's business. But she didn't. She jumped in with two feet, maybe a little naively, but she did it because her friend mattered to her. Derrick was a force to be reckoned with. A seasoned spy embroiled in scandal concerning another woman, he had little use for the ton or their gossip. Well, until he met Amelia, lol. The attraction was lightning fast and hurricane strong. It took them, and me, by surprise. Amelia believed her heart already spoken for, and Derrick... Well, he didn't play by society's rules. What was one miss from another, you know? Yet when his heart spoke, he listened and considered what he had to do to win Amelia for himself. Their relationship was amusing to watch as they discovered things about themselves and made room for change within themselves in order to be together. Sometimes it's hard to balance romance and suspense. Sometimes there's too much of one and not enough of the other. Sometimes the resolution to the suspense comes too quickly because it has to match the defining moment in the romance. That isn't the case here. Ms. Delecki did a terrific job writing about both in tandem so I didn't feel like, "When did that happen?" or "Wait. So what about them?" A great read for romance readers who love the historical genre but need something more than balls, Seasons, gowns, and courtships. This one might be right up your alley if that's what you're looking for, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. (Received from Tasty Book Tours for an honest review)
