I think that the research behind the story is exceptional, the characters are very well drawn (even the truly irritating), and the plot is different from the ordinary even though it lacked the urgency often found in many mysteries. The publisher's blurb is somewhat informative and there is no need for spoilers, but the writing is better than indicated, and that's what makes this worthwhile. I requested and received a free copy through AudioBookBOOM. I think that Jayne Entwistle was an excellent choice for narrator!

Reviewed by Lisa McCombs for Readers' Favorite Henrietta, eldest of eight children, often feels the burden of trying to keep her family afloat after the death of her father. While her mother takes in mending and her younger sister does the same, most of the living expenses fall on Henrietta’s shoulders. Henrietta does not complain, though, as her assortment of jobs gets her out of the small home filled with children and misery. Her employers are kind folk and always willing to do what they can to help Hen, but times are difficult and the economy suffers. So, when her friend, Polly, announces that Hen really needs to apply for an usherette position at the Promenade, Henrietta is forced to lay aside good judgement in lieu of the extra money she can earn working at a job of which she knew her mother would not approve. All goes well until Mama Leone, the proprietor of the Promenade, is found dead, putting everyone under suspicion and the careful eye of detective inspector Clive Howard. With Howard on the case, Henrietta is alarmed when she realizes that this is much bigger than one dead woman. As the body count grows, so do Hen’s feelings for Clive Howard. Reminiscent of clandestine affairs with a Philip Marlowe vibe, A Girl Like You: A Henrietta And Inspector Howard novel by Michelle Cox, will transport the reader into that golden era of gumshoe romance. Cox’s use of literary detail brings scenes into full focus as the reader anxiously races through the pages of this deliciously written cloak and dagger affair. A delightful story.

I really enjoyed the character of Henrietta. She's truly a girl with spunk - and nerve. The historical setting of 1935 Chicago was fun - and I had never heard of a "taxi dancer" - so that was all great fun. Great start to a new series. I will definitely be on the lookout for the next book.

A Girl Like You is the very first book in the Henrietta & Inspector Howard series. It's 1930's Chicago and Henrietta is dealt with trying to provide for her large family after her father suicide himself. As Henrietta tries to find work, a new offer from a friend will drag her into the dark world of drugs, crime and prostitution. When Henrietta's friend Polly offers her to come work with her being a Taxi Dancer, she accepts and she meets a very handsome but mysterious man named Clive Howard. After a murder at work and everyone not saying what really happened that night, Clive takes Henrietta under his wing and want her to do undercover work at a theater that is known for shady deals. As Henrietta gets into this dark world and learning what is really going on, one night will change Henrietta and the truth about everything will come out. Everything will lead us to a wonderful surprise at the end and to set us up for what is to come for Henrietta and Clive!! For some reason I can be picky about books that are set in the 20's and 30's but I really like this book and I'm glad that BookSparks had it on their April Showers Blog Tour! I loved everything about this book and I can't help but wonder where this series is gonna go with the characters but you can bet that I'll be reading every single one of these books! For being a debut Author, Michelle knows how to write a book that keeps you wanting to know more about this world!! Thank You to Michelle Cox for having such a fantastic debut novel that I can't wait to see what is next for Henrietta and Clive!! I received this book from the Publisher via NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I received this book from the BookSparks April Showers Blog Tour.
