About the Author

The late Julia Conkling Hornbostel was born in Philadelphia, graduated from Florida State University with a B.A. in English, and settled in Wisconsin. She completed graduate school at Indiana University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. Hornbostel taught college English and Humanities courses beginning in 1964, first at Beloit College and then at the University of Wisconsin-Rock County. She helped establish the Women's Studies program on the University of Wisconsin's Centers Campuses in the early 1980s, and chaired the program in the years following.
