I am not a fan of football, but when the opportunity to read A Life Intercepted by Charles Martin presented itself, I jumped at it. I have found Charles Martin’s books to be beautifully written and always thoughtful. Their settings in the Georgia/Florida area are consistently of interest since that is where I live. A Life Intercepted did not disappoint. Football is a big part of the story, but it is more about injustice, loss, forgiveness, and redemption. Matthew, “The Rocket”, is a great quarterback. He has had more notoriety than most young men who play in both high school and college, but he remains a really “good” guy. He has now signed a big professional contract and endorsements. The one who keeps him tethered to the ground and centered is his wife, Audrey. Now they are about to have the life they have dreamed about and worked hard to achieve. Those dreams are destroyed by charges of a heinous crime which Matthew cannot explain and cannot find a credible defense. Consequently, Matthew spends the next twelve years in jail. Only his old teammate/representative, Wood, and “Coach” Ray continue to keep in touch with him. When Matthew is released from prison, he must maintain contact with the authorities. He decides to return to his hometown, searching for his wife. He confronts much antagonism and hatred, but he also finds redemption in a new challenge and possibly answers to his deepest questions. This was a highly engaging book. The characters were very real and sympathetic. Charles Martin always portrays his heroes/heroines honestly with all their character flaws. It was so hard to put down that I read most of it in one sitting. I received this from NetGalley in return for my honest opinion.

Right off, I'll tell you I love Charles Martin's writing and have read all of his books.  But, this is my least favorite.  Not really quite believable, way to much football info that I skimmed over and was just sort of glad when it was over.  But, await his next book.

Take a young man--a man of great talent and impeccable morals and accuse him of a heinous crime at the peak of his career. Destroy every relationship he holds dear, with a lie, and then send him to prison. And finally, set him free, 12 years later, while binding the reminder of falsehood around his ankle in the form of an ankle bracelet monitor--a tether, and a reminder to others that he is a "threat." Take a man who is willing to risk his own freedom in the pursuit of lifting another young football player by training him to be great. A man whose true desire is to heal the wounds borne by his wife, to remove the shame, heal the heartbreak, no matter the cost. Once again, Charles Martin has written a book that is carefully crafted, thoroughly researched, and impossible to put down. It is a love story at heart. A story of redemption, sacrifice, humility, and hope. Don't miss this book!

Well all hope that when we walk this path called life, that adversity will somehow overlook us, that it will happen to the "other" guy and not us. We'd prefer it that way but so often it does happen to us and begs us to ask the question, now that this has happened, how will we manage? Will it change the course of our lives so much that we don't move forward, that we forget how to live without that title, that salary, that marriage, that family any longer. What truly defines who we are inside? Certainly not our circumstances as one man is about to find out. In the latest novel from Charles Martin, A Life Intercepted, takes us through the struggle and adversity of what happens to the rising football star Matthew "the Rocket" Rising. He was the greatest thing to ever happen to Gardi, Georgia. From his high school career as quarterback it was as perfectly scripted as you would hope a life as a quarterback would be. The back to back wins throughout his years in high school, back to back wins subsequently in college, and the hope of a future with his wife and high school sweetheart Audrey. He was much different than all the other football heroes because he refused to take any personal credit for the teams wins, instead emphasizing that it takes an entire team and not just one man. That was what set him apart from everyone else. He had his heart and mind in the right places and not just on his skills as a football player. Even his wife supported his game from the humble beginnings to the cusp of success. But just before he got to the top of his future game, just when it looks like all his dreams would come true, the lights would be turned out and his life would take a turn he never saw coming and all those who truly believed in Matt's character would begin to doubt they ever knew him at all. Now the only thing facing him would be 12 years behind bars at prison for a crime he didn't remember committing and one that would change how the world would forever label him including his wife Audrey. This is Matthew's story of what happened and how he would attempt the come back of his life. I received A Life Intercepted by Charles Martin compliments of Center Street Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest opinion. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review and the opinions in this review are strictly my own. I've been a huge fan of Charles Martin's novels because they truly cut to the core of who we are as humans and this is no exception as he begins to strip away Matthew Rising from his humble beginnings to his pinnacle of success. What dedication he has to encourage and motivate his fellow teammates and to showcase the true unconditional love he has for his wife Audrey. I couldn't imagine how painful this was for her and even his close friends. This is a fictional novel but based on the Author's Notes at the end, shows the true inspiration of this idea for the novel. It truly shows the power of forgiveness and creates an inspiration for those areas in our own life where we might need to exercise forgiveness and just what it really means for us. For fans of football fiction with a side of romance thrown in for good measure or if you are just a fan of Charles Martins' novels, definitely pick this one up. I would rate it a 4 out of 5 stars.

I am reading A Life Intercepted at this time and cannot put it down! Every one of his books are wonderful, descriptive, exciting, and leave you with a new thought about life. Charles Martin started his book tour on September 2 in his hometown of Jacksonville, FL and what a treat to be there to hear him review his new book. If I could give him 10 stars I would!

Wish I could tell everyone that I met Charles Martin, but I had to work during his book signing, so my sweet husband went for me. Got this one on Wednesday, finished it on Friday. It's that good. I'm still working on the lessons taken from this book, but like all other Charles Martin books, this was so beautifully written and is an amazing story. .

Wonderful story full of hope, heart, and redemption, and forgiveness. No one can write like Charles Martin. There is so much that can be taken away from each and every one of his books. This is book I could not put down. Loved it.

Wow. Just...wow. This author took a subject I have no interest in whatsoever (football) & a main character I'd have turned my nose up at as soon as the reason for his imprisonment is told, and made me intrigued in the story, fall in love with the characters, laugh out loud, sob like a baby, spend an entire day glued to my chair because I'm so wrapped up in this story, and actually even begin to LIKE sports for a minute. I do not come across writing like this often. Ever the critic when it comes to books & writing, there are maybe two other books I can think of where not a flaw was found. Absolute perfection, this. Absolute. Perfection.

This was a wonderful book! It is a story of love, loss, and forgiveness. It was poignant at times, completely heartbreaking at others. It was one of the most touching books I've read in awhile, which is something I seem to always be able to say about Martin's books. He is such a spectacular storyteller! In this one, he again created great characters that I felt very invested in, an intriguing storyline, and a compelling setting. Matthew Rising had it all as a young college graduate. He had a supportive wife that he loved utterly, the promise of a spectacular career in the NFL, and the adoration of the nation. After being accused of a horrible crime, he lost it all. Twelve years later he is released from prison on parole and returns to his hometown, hoping to find his wife, Audrey, who disappeared shortly after he was incarcerated. When he runs across Audrey, even though she seems filled with hate for him, she asks Matthew to coach a talented teenager whose only hope of going to college is a football scholarship. Knowing that being near the young man, Dee, can send him back to prison, Matthew will still do anything for Audrey. Charles Martin is a favorite author for me, and this book is a good example of the reason. It was very emotionally intense, and made me laugh and cry. Even though it had quite a bit about football, which I know virtually nothing about, that didn't affect my enjoyment. There were a couple of times when I felt lost for a paragraph or two during the more technical football parts, but the wonderful story more than made up for that. Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC in return for an honest review.

LOVED this book!! Reading a book that brought in the game of football was awesome! What a gripping story of winning back the love from your one and only and risking everything to achieve such love. The author knows who to write a gripping story, this one about love, losing that love, and then earning that love again. You really felt this story as you read it. Highly recommend this book!

An unexpected treasure! The story draws you in immediately - a very likeable football player at the beginning of his career. It's not the football aspect - it's the human drama that unfolds and tears at your heart. It's about injustice and redemption and love. It's always a good thing when characters in a book become people I would like to know. Well done, Mr. Martin.

I love, love, love Charles Martin's writing style and have read all of his books (which are far too few). Although this book has a football platform (and although I'm not a huge football fan), I still couldn't put the book down. As usual, Martin's characters demonstrate the meaning of integrity despite uncontrollable life circumstances and take you, as the reader, through the journey of discovery along with the characters. When I finished this book, I felt inspired to step up my personal level of integrity. I was also quite proud to share my newly discovered knowledge about football with my husband. :)

This story surprised me, how much I enjoyed it!  There is a lot of football in it, but not so much that female readers won't get sucked into pulling for the main characters to come out as winners.  A few surprises along the way too!  Highly recommend.
