A perfectly normal 11-year-old boy on the threshold of adolescence, whose adventure simply marks the progression from childhood to youth and early manhood, the time of the awakening of the senses and the pursuit of the opposite sex. The ''little hero'' falls desperately in love with the beautiful and melancholy Madame M., leaps on the back of an untamable thoroughbred so as not to suffer humiliation in her eyes, and aids in concealing her grand (perhaps even pure) passion for another gentleman from her hateful husband.
