Overview

In a candid and moving book, Kate asks the question that every female artist has to answer: How do I live and love and stay true to myself and my art? It's a perennial question, one that Kate feels she is grappling with alone in her small-town Michigan life.
In the end, she resorts to an old method of escape, with disastrous consequences. Abandoned, shamed and without resources, she faces an uphill battle as she struggles to regain her self-esteem, return to her sons, and honor the painting that has been inside her all along.
It's a journey that is both unique and universal, as Kate shows in tracing her own brave and often turbulent life.
This memoir follows Kate's thirty years of trying, failing, enduring, and thriving. An absorbing tale of resilience and and transformation that will resonate with anyone who has a passion.
Read this inspiring book for its lessons and its lovely, honest prose.

A Lone Birch in an interesting and inspiring autobiography about an artist's journey, through travail and triumph, to make a name for herself in the difficult and ever-changing art world. It is an honest look at the author's regrets and proud moments, and how every step managed to lead to a happy conclusion. I have myself been in Moynihan Gallery several times. She is a true artist!

I have been in Kate's gallery many times. I never realized the struggles she went through. She is a hero to me because she persevered. She knew what she wanted and made plans to reach that goal. There were hardships, disappointments and failures along with success. I am so happy for her that she is retiring from a successful art gallery and moving on to other things, such as lectures and grandkids. Great book about the ups and downs of her artistic career.

I bought this book when I visited the Moynihan gallery during the Holland Tulip Festival in May. I window shopped many of the store fronts along 8th street, but this shop drew me in. Being an art teacher, I was very interested in the many artworks for sale and was delighted to find out that the artist was indeed in the shop. This book caught my eye and Kate graciously autographed it for me. In reading her book, I was impressed by Kate's honesty in telling the story of her life. I could relate with her on so many levels and appreciate that she has shared her triumphs and heartaches with vulnerable transparency It was quick and easy read. Her inspiring story is very encouraging.

Chronicles the unconventional path taken by a passionate woman who failed to accept a 'Stepford' existence expected of her generation. Inspiring for those willing to take a risk to make their dream a reality. Paints a very vivid and relatable narrative, tackling many challenges women continue to battle today.

Kate tells her life story in an honest and reflective way. I found myself thinking of my own life choices and how a person’s future is impacted by the choices made

A very honest account. Kate grew up in a time and family that made the role of homemaker seem like the obvious choice. When she found herself depressed and unfulfilled, she was brave enough to work incredibly hard to make her life as an artist a reality. Putting the words on paper now, decades and much success later, is a generous gift to encourage others to pursue what feels true about themselves.

Kate’s determination led her to the fulfillment of her desires. The choices she made were not always easy to make, but through her struggles, she managed to be able to come back home to Michigan. After reading the book, I have a new appreciation of our birch painting Kate painted for us.

Kate Moynihan peels back the layers of her life to find that she made some decisions that changed the course of her life forever. The person we become is always shaped by the decisions we make. In Kate’s memoir, you are given an opportunity to reflect on Kate’s choices but that may also challenge you to reflect on your own choices in your own life. Kate is an artist and her writing style uses words to paint images on the canvas of the page for the reader. It is an interesting story of one woman’s real life journey to become her true, authentic self.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept my interest throughout because I wanted to know what would happen next in her life. Many of us have made similar choices along the way. Her trademark is the birch tree. Strong and beautiful--very appropriate.

Kate's book is super relate-able. I found myself struggling along with her as an artist myself. Her journey is inspiring in that she took a chance and followed her passion. I think anyone can learn from her mistakes, her courage to keep going, and her strength to be true to herself. A great read to share with anyone.

Having read Kate's other books on raising her and highlighting their adventures, it was interesting to read about her own journey during this time. As women we all have tough choices to make regarding our children, careers, relationship status and a multitude of other choices. We don't always make the right choices and people can be quick to judge them. Kate made some difficult decisions and I really enjoyed reading about her journey. She is a remarkable woman and has overcome her self doubts that are evident through the book. I admire her strength and the amazing woman she is now. This book is a must read for anyone who has ever struggled with growing up with a mother that was not always supportive and exhibited criticism when support was needed.
