Description: This book provides quick, on-the-spot, yet very detailed information on hand and upper extremity anatomy. The text is complemented by a combination of detailed anatomical dissections and illustrations. The chapters are nicely organized by anatomic site. Three appendixes provide data on muscle insertions and origins, compartments, and palmar spaces.
Purpose: It is intended as a comprehensive, yet clinically relevant, anatomy reference for the elbow to the fingertips that is portable and readily accessible. This worthwhile objective has been more than adequately met with this treatise.
Audience: According to the authors, this book is written for "students of hand and upper extremity surgery." In fact, I think this is an excellent resource for medical students, residents, fellows, therapists, and clinicians who encounter patients with hand conditions on an occasional basis.
Features: This book returns to the traditional tenet that an intimate knowledge of anatomy is the basis for successful surgery. Who can argue with this? This book provides readers with exacting information on hand, wrist, and forearm anatomy as would be visualized with surgical dissection. The photos and illustrations are impeccable for anyone other than experienced surgeons who already have such a mental imprint.
Assessment: This is really a pocketbook, as it is labeled. It is a useful quick reference that residents or medical students might keep in their lab coat pocket. For this purpose, it is superb. There are other books that provide larger and more detailed illustrations and photographs, and the authors of this book admit that. It serves its purpose well and is very useful for its intended audience.
