Fresh from self-imposed exile in South Africa, a flagrant chancer, George Twyford, slips back into a war-torn and rationed London, with a big chunk of money and even bigger ideas.
Most of Kentish Town welcome his return but his estranged wife and father-in-law feel differently. The first despises his desertion, the second is the brutish Police sergeant who instigated it!
Striving to evade both, he identifies with the plight of lifelong chums and feels a strong urge to improve it for them but, always in a hurry, perceives that his favourite option must be the black market and with gusto begins to change the fortunes of those close to him.
