"Acquired Language Disorders: A Case-Based Approach, Third Edition, is a practical, easy-to-follow, informative guide for students and clinicians. The authors present each case from an impairment-based perspective with practical application to improving activities of daily living, as well as a social interactive perspective to create a wholistic picture of each case. For people with aphasia, clinicians are encouraged to consider not only language but also executive functions, attention, memory, and visuospatial skills. Information in the text coordinates the assessment process to a treatment plan informed by the Aphasia: Framework for Outcome Measurement (A-FROM) model, an expansion from the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). This edition begins with a review of the basics of brain-behavior relationships and pertinent medical terminology for treating individuals who have a neurological impairment. Description: This book, now in its third edition, covers acquired neurogenic language disorders using a case-based approach. The second edition was published in 2013. A companion website with instructor resources is available on the Plural+Plus platform.
Purpose: The book attempts to bridge the gap between theory and clinical practice by applying two models, a Target Assessment Snapshot (TAS) and an Aphasia: Framework for Outcome Measurement (A-FROM), to 15 case studies. These models depict each case study in terms of specific language and cognition deficits following neurologic injury. This type of book is helpful because learning through case studies is an effective way to learn how to apply knowledge to real-life situations.
Audience: The authors do not identify their intended target audience. Given its broad content, the book appears intended for undergraduate students studying communication sciences and disorders. It might also be useful for practicing speech-language pathologists who want a broad reference for clinical practice with adults with acquired language disorders. The authors both hold doctorates in speech-language pathology and are professors at La Salle University with specialties in neurogenic communication disorders.
Features: After a review of neuroanatomy and assessment, the book covers various forms of aphasia, right hemisphere disorder, traumatic brain injury, dementia, and encephalopathy. It ends with a review of select language treatment approaches for these disorders. In addition, there are six helpful appendixes that include helpful forms and worksheets as well as a comprehensive index. Each chapter on a disorder is organized by characteristics of the disorder, a case study, a critical thinking/learning activity, treatment considerations, therapeutic goals, and references. It is a well-organized, clearly written book. The TAS as well as the A-FROM schematics are unique and useful tools that both students and clinicians will appreciate.
Assessment: This is an excellent book for three main reasons: first, the authors use 15 case studies to help readers understand and apply the book's contents; second, the TAS and A-FROM schematics are extremely useful tools in getting a snapshot of the strengths, weaknesses, and real-life challenges the people in these case studies face; third and final, the book is up to date in its coverage of evidence-based treatment methods for acquired language disorders. There are good competitor books out there (e.g., Introduction to Neurogenic Communication Disorders, 3rd edition, Manasco (Jones & Bartlett Learning, 2021), but I believe students will enjoy how this book engages them in applying knowledge and skills in a case study format.
