Purpose: This manual is successful in providing authors and editors with guidelines on every aspect of preparing a manuscript that is well organized, clear, readable, and authoritative.
Audience: The target audience is authors, editors, publishers, reviewers, and anyone else interested in scientific writing. While students are not specifically mentioned, they would also find this manual useful for writing academic papers. The authors are a group of editors of JAMA and the Archives family of journals.
Features: The section on preparing an article for publication contains instructions and examples for both print and electronic references, data presentation guidelines, and recommendations on ethical and legal issues involved in publication. A section on style covers usage guidelines for grammar, punctuation, and capitalization, plus a new chapter on medical indexes. A section on terminology includes abbreviations and nomenclature. The highlight of the section on measurement and quantitation is a 50-page glossary of statistical terms. The section on technical information covers fonts, spacing, and layout.
Assessment: The detailed index and the multilevel outline at the beginning of each chapter help the reader to quickly find information on a specific aspect. The manual is comprehensive and detailed, and I can't think of a single relevant aspect of medical and scientific writing that is not covered here.
