Caldwell, co-host of HGTV’s Boise Boys, brings his design expertise to the page in his excellent debut, a guide to “infusing soul—life, heirlooms, character, all the things you love, and, ultimately, your story—into every aspect of your home.” The first section, “Timber & Love,” highlights a chic industrial home, a mid-century modern abode, and a spacious mountain spot. “Natural & Organic” showcases a historic firehouse-turned-home, an Italian-style house, and a charmingly eclectic homestead filled with knickknacks; “Classic & Cozy” takes readers through a comfy Craftsman bungalow, a small but bold cottage, and a Spanish-inspired estate. Caldwell posits that intention is the key to good design and notes that he begins every project with three core objectives: finding the focus (“to entertain, to rest, or to work” are some options), creating the feel, and emphasizing the details. He also shares how he designed his own place: “From the functionality of the floor plan to the selection of the finishes, making a space that would work for my family was my goal.” Vivid photos effortlessly pull readers into Caldwell’s stylish world. Caldwell is the designer star of HGTV's shows Boise Boys and Outgrown. This book is his first, and it is, in essence, a photographic portfolio of nine home design projects from his HGTV series. Its primary focus is the design aesthetics of the homes showcased, less about their functionality and none on their infrastructure. The introduction and chapter frontpages outline Caldwell's design philosophy and offer some commonsense tips for any homeowner contemplating a home renovation project. There is no doubt he is passionate about home design. The photography is lush and inviting, and the textual captions give short design tips. While all ideas are visually attractive, some are also impractical. For example, the wooden backsplash behind the stove is a potential fire hazard. VERDICT This book is useful to anyone planning a renovation project to cull tips and ideas but with the caveat that its primary focus is on the design aesthetics. It does not contain information on a home's functionality or infrastructure. An optional purchase for public libraries or where HGTV-related publications are in demand.—Marjorie Mann
