In the 1990s, 'protection', 'import substitution' and 'intervention' have become dirty words, part of the 'leyenda negra' of Latin America development in the postwar period. This book attempts a fresh look at the controversial years between the end of the Second World War and the point when, at varying dates in different countries, a discontinuity occurs in which the postwar 'style of development' ceased to play a central role in the economic evolution of the region. The analysis is based on seven case studies covering eleven countries.

Choice

In 1982, a group of economists and economic historians met to consider the effect of the 1929 Depression on Latin America and to explain the continent's rapid recovery. That led to the 1984 . New members joined the group in 1997, and held a series of workshops expanding their coverage to the entire century. Those generated an overview volume in 1998. The first and third of the three volumes here also emerged from those workshops, while the second volume is an update of the original 1984 study. They range between 10 and 12 articles each.
